Found a way to get the wife buy a new gun for my collection. Only had to spend around $5500.00 on a new roof and adddition over the porch. Had contractors here for last two days and work is coming along great. Wife was so happy she broke out the Cabela's catalog and started ordering for me. Can't wait to see just what all she bought for me.

Cabela's has the Pietta brass frame "navy" Colt on sale right now, can't beat the price, good luck. :)

The 1851 Navy Is a blast to shoot. Reloading it is a pain in the backside though. If you get the Navy sheriff It'll wear the palm of your hand out in a heartbeat because of the short ram. Hoping to eventually get an 1858 Army. It has a backstrap so you can load up several cylinders at one time and don't have to break the gun completly down just to replace the cylinder.

There is a small press that will allow you to load the cylinder off the gun, Dixie Gun Works has them, search the catalog and you will find it. The '58 Remmie cylinder drops out easy, you can use extra cylinders or just drop it out, load it on the little press and be back in action in no time.

Nice Pietta brasser, have they been calling this the sheriff's model? They used to call the brass frame "Navy's" "Reb" revolvers. True enough the Rebs did use some brass to make pistol frames, but the Colt Navy ( a .36, not .44) was one they didn't copy that way. They should have called this model the "Belly gun" because it was gamblers, and rough types who cut down barrels to make guns they could hide under their shirts. The Sheriffs, and other law men of the era liked the big revolvers, Wild Bill carried two .36 Colt 1851 Navy revolvers stuck in a sash worn around his waist. There was a reason for the long barrels of the BP era, it was to allow the black powder charge to burn up entirely before exiting the barrel so to give the bullet it's maximum speed. Pietta has always been very creative with it's products, they found out that people were making their own short barreled revolvers, so they started making them for us. I recently aquired a short barrel '58 Remmie, it has a nice balance.

This particular one is called the Navy Confederate Sherrif. From what the literature said that came with the weapon. They were used by law enforcement in the south and the reason for the brass parts was due to a shortage of steel during the war. Due to the brass parts they highly recommend not firing a full powder charge.
