New Owner of 91/30

Post by WALKERS210 »

I was visiting, more like my second home, local gun shop this week when the Brown truck made his rounds. Shop just received two M91/33's and I got the pick of the two. Owner said he was going to order more because they were selling so darn fast. I never really gave a lot of thought to owning one but in it's own way its ugly and beautiful at the same time. In my youth the harder a rifle or shotgun kicked the better I liked it, but that was a long time ago. Shop owner threw in two packs of the 7.62x54R ammo, the surplus type, to see what I though about how it shoots. I know with this type ammo cleaning is paramount to maintaining a shooting rifle and not just a boat anchor. The one thing I was wondering about is JUST How bad is this thing gonna kick me. Health issue keep me from doing a lot of things but if I have to break out the back brace, tape a roll of bubble wrap around the stock I will shoot it at least 4 or 5 time. Wish me luck and lets hope that my shoulder will hold up.

I have some shoulder problems. I bought a cheap shoulder pad at Academy, and use the famous white trash cheek rest.

Congrats........... to me the recoil is negligible. But then I have been known to go plinking with a pair of 375 H&H's bolt guns

The recoil is on par with a 12 Ga. shotgun.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

For whatever reason, mosin recoil has never really seemed that bad to me. Maybe the stock just fits me well or something :vconfused:

Welcome to the forum with that new 91/30 :) Some folks think the Mosin kicks, and I suppose it does, but I haven't noticed it in at least 30 years, it's what happens when you get carried away and shoot rounds by the 10,000  After awhile you just don't feel kick anymore, but if you have a medical condition then pad up, a shooting jacket with a built in shoulder pad, proper placement of the buttplate in the shoulder pocket and holding the rifle firmly in place as well as the stock pad should help. Not long ago I took some pistol shooting friends of mine out to shoot some real rifles for the first time, the one they complained about the most was the US M1903, whined about it hurting them so much that I had to take it away from them. The one they loved shooting the most was one of my 91/59 carbines ( 91/30 cut down to M38 carbine specs) I would have thought the carbine would kick them around the most, but no, they loved it, they didn't complain about the 91/30 either, except that they felt it was a bit long. May take you a few rounds to get used to it, but I think you will do just fine with that 91/30, except that a few packs of ammo will run out fast, better order a crate.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Thanks for the positive outlook on shooting this beauty, not trying to use medical issues as a way out or whinning. After a 4 yr battle with cancer, two heart attacks, and rods and screws holding the back together I finally had to admit that maybe I can't take on all the physical challenges that I once did. Also trying to make the wife think that this one will kick worse than a BlueGrass Mule on Sunday morning so she don't lay claim to it. Going to load up and drive to my shooting range which is around 400-500 feet from the back door this afternoon

That all sounds good. The shooting part, not all the health problem stuff. Hopefully you can snap a few pictures to share here.

Walker enjoy. Just be careful those M/N's have been known to multiply.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!
