I have seen two types of headspace gauges, but was wondering if anyone makes a Throat Erosion gauge for the russian Mosin Nagants
Thank for any info

I guess there is no such gauge. zero replies. I do have a chamber mirror, I will just have to guess on how badly eroded the lands are.

OK another question...With a 7.62x54R bullet how would you properly check the barrel crown?

Thanks for any replies.

Rich, you have to wait for one of the gunsmiths to see your question, this is a tool a gunsmith would be familiar with but most collectors and casual shooters would not have. It's something a competition shooter would be concerned about, but collectors rarely buy antiques with the idea that they will be anything but low average shooters at best.

Thank Junk Yard Dog,
Those sites have some good info,it has enlighten me on what I'm looking for.
I'm not looking for any type of competition shooting with my planned, soon to purchase Mosin Sniper. Just looking for some decent hits at 100/300 yds. I have a nice M44 & 91/30 that shoot great with iron sights at 100 yds. Maybe next weekend 10/12-13 I'll stop at RGuns and pick up a nice sniper and with a scope was hoping to at least get some nice groupings. With bad throat erosion or messed up crown I might as well buy from any other place a pay a cheaper price. But I'm also a fanatic on the real thing. Most of what I've read here is that they prefer RGuns to any one else. I don't care if the barrel is frosted just good deep lands & grooves, excellent crown and hopefully a decent throat.
Not asking for to much. LOL
One Dog to another Thanks again.

Make sure and check the lands and grooves at the muzzle. Alot of times they are worn there close to the end from cleaning. If it is counterbored it is likely to shoot good. :D

Some of the refurbs did sneak past with serious bore problems, I do not have a throat erosion gauge so I have no idea the condition there , but I have seen some badly worn crowns that should have been counterbored but weren't. Most of my refurbs, and I have a lot of them, are 3-4 MOA shooters at 100 yards with ordinary surplus ammo, some will do much better, but I would say they average 3-4" groups at that range. Mind you my vision sucks and my shooting has suffered somewhat.

What JYD said, I also have a problem with my glasses in that the line dividing the upper portion of my prescription and the lower part cuts right through my sight picture when I'm 'hunkered' down on the stock. The front post ocassionaly disappears on me as well

Glasses wore them all my life. Had no problem when I was young, but now at 60 I use lineless Trifocals. Top for distance & bottom to read that damn small writing on those pill bottles. I use the mid to focus about a foot and a half from my finger and extended arm, which is about right for my front sights on my rifles. But yes it still not like it was when I was young. I'm pretty much in to bench shooting so I don't need my left hand to hold the forearm. I'll take that hand over the rear stock under my cheek and use my finger to raise my glasses up & down From top looking at the target to mid getting a sharp front sight picture. It works for me but still a pain in the rump. So I have been scoping most of my rifles and do like the dot that has a quick site picture.
Thanks everyone for the info and still planing on RGuns this weekend, If I get anything I'll try to send pics.
