I've read it. What surprised me right of the bat was he was a sailor in Vladisvostok which is on the east coast and volunteered to go to Stalingrad. That is a long ways a way.

One chapter I found was an interesting read was about a german sniper who recently had killed one of Zaitsev's men and close friend. Zaitsev returned to area and searched the area for hours using a trench periscope. There was a destroyed German field piece with empty artillery cases laying about. Out of boredom he counted the casings and while doing so he saw one with its bottom cut out. Just about the time he noticed it Zaitsev noticed a spark in the cutout casing and then the earth exploded near his head rattleing him some.

The following day he and sniper Kulikov returned to the area. The cutout casing was gone. After searching the area it was again located in a different area. This time he could see the sniper's scoped rifle and what looked like a camera device to record his shot inside the casing. While Zaitsev watched the casing... Kulikov used a decoying manuover to force the sniper to shoot and when the german sniper cycled his bolt Zaitsev eliminated the sniper with well placed shot to his hairline.
