When you you are putting the bolt back together and and tighting the pin down , Do you tighten all the way to where that line does not line up or do you back it out till the line lines up on the back of the bolt ?

Yeah use the guide on the MN disassembly tool otherwise you could easily have the firing pin come out too far. See the section on Maintenance and then pick Cleaning and there is a great description of the bolt. Read it carefully then read it again then read it as your doing it. Once you figure it out its easy. Ummm you did get a tool with your rifle right?

Usually you will want the rear of the firing pin flush with the cocking piece. One of mine has to stick out a bit in order to not have to much pin protrusion at the bolt head.

If you do not line up the screw slot with the scribe marks, the connector bar will automatically force the lineup as you install it. After you put on the connector bar don't worry if the lineup is not exact. (It is a bit easier to install the connector bar if the screw slot is at least roughly lined up with the scribe marks.)

If the gage on the tool indicates you have to alter the protrusion, adjust the screw 1/2 turn at a time. When you get it right, make a note of how it looks at the rear so you can start at that point next time.

If you can't find a tool at the shop they turn up on eBay and Gunbroker all the time.

You can also measure the protrusion with a caliper if it has a depth gauge. The protrusion should be between 0.075 and 0.095 inch.

It is neat to have the tool though. It has a screwdriver tip and it can also be used for a wrench for the firing pin and the bayonet.

Check your PM's for a link to the kit they should have given you with the rifle, it has the screwdriver/firing pin tool and the rest of the tools plus the pouch.

I have found that the cocking knob typically runs all the way down and backs off till the mark lines up, then check with the tool. If the knob or firing pin have been mismatched since the mark was made they may not line up.

All of mine are pretty flush and the lines line up. I usually check them real close before I take them apart, and then I put them back together and use the tool to be safe.
I took my first M38 apart with out a tool when I got it. It was a mess I did not have a tool so after cleaning it I took a round pulled the bullet emptied the powder and held
the gun away from my face and fired the primer off. But I have at least 5 or 6 tools now and have one in each gun cleaning kit and one in my truck. Safety first.

Word to the wise here on these tools! They all vary slightly (Like thousandths) so just to be sure I only use one tool of all the many I have to adjust all the Mosin firing pins. I frankly doubt that variance could cause a problem in adjustment but I just stick to one tool all the time to err on the side of safety. Old men worry about things I guess! Bill
