Ex-mosin sniper restoration

Post by Mosin Man 87 »

Hey everyone this is Mosin Man, and im new here, so any advice would be appreciated. My question for today is: If I purchased an ex mosin sniper with the scope mount holes filled in, is there a way to un-fill those holes and remount a scope? Also, how expensive would it be? Thanks, and happy shooting!

We don't discuss altering a rifle after it leaves the arsenals hands. That would include "re-snipering" a ex-sniper rifle. Buy a real one or don't bother. The cost to do the job right is too high anyway and it will destroy the value of the rifle.

On the other hand, hang out and see what you've really got. I think you'll find that the rifle you have is more interesting than you originally thought.

All things considered this is about the most credible place to get info you'll find.

It's OK.

We just try to keep the two side separated so they don't fight! :bwink: .

This a "Preservation" forums.

If you have an ex-sniper right now, it is a cool piece of history you have right now. There are plenty of places to buy a full on sniper rifle. But your rifle was a sniper at one time and that is an interesting part of it's history. But civilians can't make a sniper rifle, only arsenals can, nor can they re-sniper them. Alteration by civilians are devastating to the rifle and it history and also it's value. And even worse, it can't be reversed.....ever.

Take some time and enjoy your rifle with the history is comes with before deciding to change it's history. You will be glade you did.

Thanks for all the advice guys, i actually havent bought a rifle yet, i was just trying to get a feel for my options. I'll consider all of this when i do purchase one. And dolk, i agree with your point about the interesting history of the rifles. it is perhaps the most interesting part of these rifles, especially the snipers and ex-snipers. who knows where they have been and what they have done. :D

If it's a sniper you're interested in check these out. http://www.rguns.net/rifles/rifles-bolt.shtml These are without a doubt the real deal. Provenance proven and accepted by any collector that knows Mosin Magants and particularly PU Snipers. Welcome to the forum.

i have a 1943 Izhevsk ex sniper. to re sniper it would un do all the proper ex sniper work. my ex sniper has the wood repair, lined out scope number and screw threads still in the receiver. that is very cool to me. it would be a shame to try to bring back its past life. it has a great bore and other sniper touches.[ metal shims in stock, staked trigger pin that always falls out etc]
