Well. After waiting for about a month to finally go shoot my mosin I am finally going. Can't wait to get out there an shatter my shoulder bone. Haha. I've got 58 rounds. 60 minus the two I fired off in the woods behind my house and I've got everything needed for a good range day. Except beautiful women of course.... Anyways. Anyone have any useful tips before I go out to blast some paper into oblivian.

Keep that rifle snug against your flesh, leave no air gap or it will hammer you. Have fun, and as for the woman, best you have no distractions at the range, that's how bullets and cannon balls end up getting blasted through peoples homes

So had a great time out at the range today. I only brought 58 rounds and didn't even use all of it. WOW. You guys are right. After about 20 rounds you really start to feel it. My shoulder is really hurting now. I think I will definatly have to invest in a buttpad. Anyone know where I can get one of those slip on buttpads. Do they sell them at wal-Mary or gander mountain?

I don't think i have ever used less then 60 rds. I take 4 or five guns and a bunch of ammo and shoot it all.

I got my slip on recoil pads from Gander Mountain and they make the Mosin M38 ans Steyr M95 fun to shoot and putting 100 rounds or so down
range is a joy. I never go to the range with less then 3 guns and a boat load of ammo and I stay for at least 3 hr. I usually finish the day with my
10/22 and a few bxs. of 22 lr.

I got two pads one is a slip on with a variety of thicknesses of foam pads It was like $14.00 and the other is leather and it Velcros on and it was like $ 37.00
but the slip on one works just fine, and if I didn't buy the leather one first I would just have the slip on one. When you can, pick up a .22 Rifle a brick if ammo
You can catch on sale 500 rounds for about $ 20.00 Shooting is like my therapy it gets me to relax after a week of work and the bull shit that comes with it.
As far as getting a load of ammo I try and put a little of money every week in a envelope each week and when a gun show comes to town I pick up some ammo.
Or if Gander Mountain has some on sale, but even on sale Ganders ammo is not cheap. You can get some good deals on the world wide net.
Good luck and stay safe and have fun at the range.

Sweet. Thanks for the info man. Everyone kept telling me to buy a .22 instead of a mosin. I'm sure I will at one point but I just don't enjoy them as much as something larger. I think the smallest I would go right now is a .38. I think my next gun will be either an m14 or a m1. I really want a semi auto and since the m14 has a 20 round mag I think that may be what I go with. I can't legally own handguns yet as the laws in fl require you to be 21 and I'm only 18 so for now it's just rifles and shotguns. I think if I'm lucky once my tax return come I'm going to use it to buy an m14. Ammo isn't necisarily cheap for it but I don't shoot that much. Once a month if that.

You don't need a P pad, you need practice to get yourself conditioned to the weapon. When ammo was cheaper I would be shooting up to 100 rounds a day, on my last trip to shoot with friends I shot 400+ rounds of .30-06, and 7.62x54r and could have shot 400 more without trouble. Did you hold that rifle tight to you? What is your experience with weapons? M4's? Do you know any WW2, Korean, or Vietnam vets who could give you some pointers on shooting the .30 rifles? It sounds as if the weapon was battering you and that tends to happen when you are not positioning it properly when shooting. Enough of that shit and you will be developing a flinch.

Where you from in FL. I am in Palm Beach Gardens. Think about a Ruger Mini 14 it uses the same .223 as the M14 and is a lot cheaper and easier to find.
I have a Ruger Mini 14 and a M1 Garand Which was my first issued weapon in The Army back in 1961 and when I went over seas it was a M14 and an M 16. and
then an M 60 Tank and a Colt 1911 side arm. Loved them all. I love my mini 14 it is a small copy of the M 14 and you will like it I am sure. A Ruger 10/22 is probably
one of the most popular .22 rifles ever made and you should add one to your collection when you can, I think every one of my friends that are into guns has a 10/22
The Mini 14 comes with a 5 round clip but you can get a 20 or 30 round clip also. Just some food for thought, What ever you do have fun with it and welcome to the
world of guns.

Sorry my mistake I was thinking the M14 was .223 but it was the M 16 I was remembering that used the 5.56 that
can be fired from the Mini 14.

JYD beat me too this in most respects, but I'll add my thoughts. Spend the money on ammo not a P pad. Unless your blood pressure meds make you bruise easily or you have poor bone density forget the pad, your shoulder will toughen up. Just like any other activity, go for a horseback ride for the first time in years and your ass and thighs will be sore, no saddle pad will change that. Two million 18 year old Russian girls carried these rifles in WWII and the Russians did not issue them that kind of pad. Anyway's spend the money on ammo and forget the P pad.

Here's my thoughts on not using a pad. I figure I may go shooting one a month if that. I'm not exactly a big guy. I'm 5 foot 9 and weigh approx 130 lbs. so there's not much meat on my shoulder. I did have the rifle jammed up against my shoulder as I would expect it should be. I've shot many rifle and shot guns in my 18 years so I have some experience with them. Enough to know how to hold it into my shoulder. It wasn't bad at first but after I shot one round I started to speed up a little bit and after about 30 or so consecutive shots I was really feeling it. I think for me a recoil pad would be a good investment. I'm going to try to find some workouts to build up some more muscle in my shoulder for some added coushion. I think what I may do is go ahead and buy the slip on but only use it when I can't take the steel buttplate anymore. This way I will be building tolerance to the rifle as is and then when that gets to be to much and can slip in the recoil pad and still continue shooting and having a good time without killing my shoulder.
I will have to look into the mini 14's. Sounds like a good investment. If you say it's a good gun I'll take your word and at least do some research on it. In the end I may still go for a classic m14 just because of the history and authenticity of it but I will definatly look up the ruger. Thanks for the info.
Forgot to add. I'm in Jacksonville fl.

I'd go with the pad. I can certainly shoot well without it, but since I only get out there once a month maybe, I want to enjoy myself and not have a bruised shoulder for the next 4 days. Also I tend not to want to shoot as much when my shoulder starts to hurt so my range time is cut short. Buy the cheap buttpad.

My Walmart has small limbsaver slip on recoil pads for about $20. Seem to do okay.

1934hexreceiver, given your physical size, you may find that putting on a recoil pad may cause the rifle to have too long a distance from trigger to shoulder (length of pull).
You may want to look into getting a shooting vest or jacket that would have a bit of padding yet not increase the length of pull as much.
Or simply put a hand towel or some such under a T-shirt to hold it in place. Either single layer or doubled up if necessary.

I think the length of pull will be ok. The recoil pad will only increase the length by maybe an inch. I think it's more like half an inch. It may actually help me. But I guess we will find out
