i was looking at a few Mosins with the base mount installed only. if the big bolt that locks the scope mount on to the lower bracket has corse threads is this a sign of it being fake. i thought all PUs used a fine thread. thanks

to: notabiker, In T. Lapin's 5th edition book "The Mosin-Nagant Rifle" pages 146 to 153, Mr. Lapin offers some useful sniper rifle info. with pictures. This book has many more pages with additional related references.Since the MN was produced for so long and with incomplete record keeping being common,I don't know if your good question has an absolute rule to use for measurement. Good Luck

thank you. i was looking at ex snipers and it would have been nice to pick one with the base mount on the rifle. i settled for one without a mount. it cost less and i was sure of it being a ex sniper and not a mosin with a add on base mount. now i know a lot of snipers went to yugoslavia and had the scopes removed. maybe these rifles were those rifles.

Where did you buy it? Who imported it? (import mark is either on the receiver or the end of the barrel.)
All ex snipers have had the mount holes welded up and ground off and refurbished (by the arsenals). but still have all the sniper markings on the barrel. None of them have a "base" or "mount" on them.
If the rifle came from SAMCO, and it has the holes still open and threaded and the cut out in the stock, then it is not an "ex sniper". It is still in sniper configuration so it is still a "sniper", just missing the mount and scope.
There are no ex snipers with the holes still in them.

i am not talking about my rifle, it has the proper fine threads. looking at snipers at gun dealers i see some of them have corse threads instead of fine threads. someplace i thought i saw a thread about a repro having corse threads and after firing the rifle the bolt would work loose on the scope base mount.
