I always liked the SAFN 49, and this one is a nice one !
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

The commerce which maybe carried on with the people inhabiting the line you will pursue renders a knowledge of these people important ~Thomas Jefferson~ (to- Lewis and Clark)
"But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security." -Declaration of Independence

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
I don't have a sniper setup on mine, but I have the Egyptian, and Venezuelan SAFN49's. The Egyptian has been on the range many times as I have a good supply of 8mm Mauser, the 7mm not so much , but both are so well made it's a wonder they were intended as infantry rifles.

i found it on Gunbroker about a month ago the guy had a buy it now price of $2000 but did not have any pic posted. he asked to send him a text so he could send pic. i texted him and he sent me a few pic. it looked like it was in really good shape so i did the buy it now so someone else could not jump in and grabb it. when it came in the mail i was really happy because it was in better shape then i was expecting.
there are no imports on the rifle but i was told he bought it from Western Surplus in North Hollywood CA in the 70's. im not sure why it does not have import marks but i have not been able to find them.
Import markings on surplus rifles were not required by the government prior to 1968. It's likely that your rifle was imported sometime in the early 60's. Sounds like you got a good deal, SAFN snipers are not commonly encountered, hell, the rifle itself is fairly rare as few country's adopted it, and it's service life was short before the FAL came along a few years later. The SAFN49 is a very well built weapon, and that was it's end, too expensive to produce, too heavy, too much of a early 20th century design with so many nicely milled parts rather than steel stampings.
