Recoil Buffer for AK

Post by Jolly Green Chopper »

Can someone tell me about the AK 47 Recoil buffer such as the one offered from RC Arms for $14.95 called the Valmet Recoil buffer. What is the advantage to using one? What do they do??Should I get one for my AK47 ? They are cheap enough so if they are useful I want to get one. Thanks , JGC

I read on the sks boards that they do more damage than they are worth. Don't know about aks. Probably the same?

With ak's sometimes the bolt can come all the way back and hit the back of the receiver. If you shoot it alot it can result in stress cracks at the back of the receiver. The buffer is supposed to kinda cushion at the back of the receiver to prevent the bolt from hitting it. Some people think they are a waste and others have them for all their ak's. I think its cheap insurance. Sorta like non rotating trigger pins for ar's. But beware because I have heard of some rifles that won't function properly with them installed. Probably because the buffer was too larger and wouldn't allow the bolt to come back far enough to strip off a round but I'm not sure. Check out some slow motion videos of ak's fireing on youtube and you can see what I mean about the bolt slamming into the receiver. I don't know what causes this though. Might be just the ak design, maybe too hout of ammo, or a weak spring. Hope this helps :)

Let me make a short, open, blanket comment. There are no good guns. There are no bad guns. Any gun in the hands of a bad man is a bad thing. Any gun in the hands of a descent person is no threat to anyone--- except bad people. -- Charleton Heston

Guns are not good, they are not evil. Save those descriptions for the people holding the firearm. -- Unknown
