Yes the mosin was there in egypt when moses parted the lake, and again when haysus was killed. Don't forget how the bush became the burning bush, that's right..a muzzle blast from a mosin carbine.

It's a decent starter. Some of it is even accurate.
Your next step is Doug Bowser's book and then Karl-Heinz Wrobel's set.

Is that available in English? I could only find it in German and my German is very rusty. (as in I don't know any)

I wish I could find Karls book. It has always sounded fascinating. I have the other two.

KH's book is only in German and it's expensive if you can find it. It took me a few years to find one. The pictures are phenominal.
Bowsers books is a wealth of information and history, worth it for the information about quantities manufactured and how many were still left in the arsenals when the Finns surveyed them in 1951, alone.

Who is the author? Lapin?

Yep, Terrance Lapin. I think that they are up to the 5th edition?
It's a good starter book, but he's got some blatant errors.

IIRC
Charts showing that M28's and M28/30's had the same barrel lenghth's as the M27, but were somehow 3" shorter (must have really short buttstocks).
The M27 and M28 use the same trigger.
The M24 has a barrel sleeve identical to the M28/30.
The M91/30 is 3/4" longer than the Dragoon.

That's all I can remember without pulling out my old 4th edition.
Just some basic sloppiness that he never bothered to correct.

Yeah, I got the 5th edition, but I have been unable to find those other two books you referred to. I don't read German and refuse to try at my age. If you have any other sources (I've tried the usual; Amazon) post a link.

You can find Bowser's book, occasionally on eBay, or post a WTB.
KH's books took me 3 years and a WTB to get. For the pictures alone, it is the finest reference out there.
Both came out in the late 90's.

I asked Karl- Heinz a few years back if there was any plan to translate his work into English, but at that time he indicated there was not.

Repop clips rarely do, you should have gotten some of the 40's dated Soviet ammo with the clips on thats selling now. Good luck with them :)

That would be an expensive book to republish, a publisher would have to be assured of selling thousands and the price would be a few hundred.

Lapin's books get slightly better at each reprinting I think. The problem is for every mistake he corrects he seems to introduce new ones? It is a start but should not under any conditions be considered the bible of Mosin's. Bowser's books are getting dated and many things in there have been found to be different than thought as new information is uncovered. KH's book is in German and while the pictures are good it lacks any english language translations from what I have seen of it. This is admitedly very little because after looking through it I thought the price asked was way too high for what one gets. I have the 3 volumes by Markku Palokangas called Military Small Arms in Finland 1918-1988 but it is in Finnish for the most part. However it has english subtitles for almost all charts and pictures and an english summary at the end of each chapter so it is useful. I bought it many years ago for a price I considered very expensive at the time like over $200 if I remember right. It is the best of all summaries of Finnish rifles even though it is in Finnish. It is very hard to find these days and also now very expensive too. The quality of the bindings and the over all look and fit of it is museum quality and beyond reproach. I keep hoping someday Rosetto Stone offers a course in Finnish (which they now don't) and if not to old I will take it and get full use of my three beautiful and fact filled volumes of Palokangas's great collection of information. Palokangas's volumes used to be available from ABE Books but I have not searched for anything through them for years although I do know they do still exist. Online searches done with great diligence can lead you to copies of almost any book ever written if you are willing to pay the price and if you look hard and long over a period of time can lead to great buys too. I found an original copy of a Civil War unit history written by a member of the unit and autographed by him with a personal note to a high ranking US General he was sending the copy to for $75 on a back page used book sale online about 10 years ago. I have been offered thousands for it and needles to say it will be passed on to my kids someday I hope they will cherish it as I do. Bill
