A distance family member gave me this gun about 30 years ago and been in my gun safe since. The story is it was taken from a Japanese soldier and brought back to the state, that’s all I know. Any information on what caliber or anything else would be appreciated.

Looks like a Jap type 99. It would shoot 7.7 japanese ammo. It should be available at a store or on the net. Looks like a really nice one with a full butt stock. :vcool: :vcool: :Drool1:

I think it is Type 99 7.7x58 mm Arisaka made at Nagoya Arsenal.

Japanese Arisaka type 99 used from 1941 to the end of the war, 7.7mm. Post war bringhome judging by the well ground Mum on the receiver. The Imperial chrysanthemum stamp was ordered removed from all captured Arisaka rifles after the occupation of Japan by US troops. Prior to this time many Arisaka rifles had been captured during the Island hopping campaign and brought home by returning US troops, these will have unground Mum's , or ones defaced with a few lines by Japanese soldiers. That's a nice piece of WW2 history.

Thanks for the information guys that help a lot. Would it be OK to oil the metal and wood some? Planning to have a gunsmith check her out and do a little shooting with it. Again thanks for the help.

Nice Nagoya Type 99, and yes put some oil on the metal. Question about the rifle, has that rope sling always been on the rifle, I ask because an original late war rope sling is very desirable and just adds to the coolness factor of the rifle.
