Fake PU Question
In reading several sniper forums about how to identify a fake or repro PU scope, I've noticed that more often than not the heads of the screws on the turrets is mentioned. If the heads are rounded then it probably is a genuine PU scope. If the heads of the screws are flat then it is probably a fake or repro. What is the possibility of the people who make the fakes reading these forums and putting round heads on their fakes? That would kind of eliminate the round head/flat head observation wouldn't it? Or is this idea old news?

Re: Fake PU Question
Well that is a very good question.
Nothing stops them except they haven't done it yet.
There are several other things we look at on a scope to tell if it is real or not. Most of them are not discussed by those who know how to recognize them.
We have a "How to spot a fake PU sniper" page here on the forums. It is hidden and only available to members of the forums that have been here for a while (so we know them) and if they ask to see it. It is full of examples on a PU sniper of what to look for in a fake. I am always adding things to it as we find them. Some of them are pretty obscure. It is hidden because it is not our intent to show them how to fake a PU sniper better.
It is sort of like the rear groove on a SVT40 sniper. You will not see photos of that groove because it hold very important information.

Re: Fake PU Question
Here are examples of real PU scopes. I can't tell you what to look for beyond the screws. But as you see there were 2 really 3 distinctive types. A SVT scope modified to a 91/30, not pictured. The next generation was the one pictured with the square turret mount, it is real early 43. The last is a 43 PU scope on a 44 PU Izhevsk. This is the type that you will see on R guns PUs
Since this is not top secret stuff here:
PU scope reticules move off center when the scope is adjusted.
Some will have the year of manufacture in the beginning of the S# 43xxxx
Get to know the makers marks, you can find them easily on KALINKA OPTICS, in fact go there and look at PU scopes they have. There are 4 some rarer than others, there were about 1/2 million scopes made, probably more. I know there was over 300,000 made at one plant
The knock offs usually are dated 43 have a hammer and cycle and they look new. The real ones are getting scarce and collectors are actually recording the knock off serial numbers.
Done I can go on, look at a knock off and a real one, you'll see for yourself.
Wasn't it funny, not ha ha funny... funny strange that after a picture of a SVT sniper was posted there were several of them appearing on GB and other sights, wonder why?

Re: Fake PU Question
The whole knock-off thing keeps me from lusting after a sniper. There are some folks who believe that, even the rifles that pass as "real" snipers may be faked in Russia. I figure that as long as I keep buying rifles no one else wants, they will probably be real. I mean, who in the hell would fake a $79.00 rifle?

Re: Fake PU Question
Never much cared for the Mosin snipers, much prefer the iron sight M39 for the detail work. I got my Hungarian PU, it is undeniably the real deal, and that's as far as I am going with sniper collecting.
