The finish is parkerized, or a phosphate finish, it doesn't glare in sunlight like a regular finish. Kinda think of it as a matte bluing.
Just keep the finish wiped down with a small amount of oil like you would regular bluing, that's about all I do with the ones I have with the same finish.
Also use a black or dark grey cloth to wipe it down, the rougher finish will show the fibers if a lighter color is used.

WHOOO HOOOO! Avenger, way to go. I really like it. I don't know how close the gas system is to my 56(I think the same) just use your brush to clean the tubes and like they said wipe her down with alittle oil now and then.those things are almost bullet proof!haha.to bad I don't live closer we could go tear it up! Also I was told not to oil my piston, don't know how true that is so anyone with more experience can chime in on that one.congrats again.welcome to twenty bullets for 4.97 a box at Wally world!

Just a very very thin coat of oil on both the SKS and AK piston. No excessive dripping or over oiling, same with the inside of the gas tube. There is just that chance of excessive pressure there from burning oil

, if not, it just makes a black sticky mess

.

On the Mak's and PSL I just use a .410 gauge swab with just a few drops of oil on it in the tube, you just want a film of oil both, bordering on dry. I clean the gas port with a toothpick, but don't break it, I have the tool, somewhere
Also, if it was really nasty stuff, a .20 gauge bore brush in the tube for the carbon.
There is really no wrong way to clean it, I've seen people take it apart, use a garden hose, some soap and an air compressor to blow it out.

Then oil it up.

maybe one of those patch holders on a short cleaning rod with a tiny bit of oil on it...i just dont wanna miss any spots..although it probably doesnt need oiled really unless its not ognna be shot for a few months or something right?

I'm thinking just wipe the piston down with your finger and run an oily patch through the tube like you would the barrel of a rifle.speaking of barrels, is that chrome lined, and is that a thirty rounder? I think it would look good if you just oiled the wood.I've heard they use knotted boot laces and motor oil to clean them in the big sand box out east.

Yup, if you don't plan on shooting it for a while, oil it up. "BUT" before you do, remember to pull it apart(takes what, 3 minutes

) and give it quick oil drying wipe down

Nice. I have been seeing these a lot lately. My LGS has them priced pretty good with a bayonet. Still not sure yet. I'm on the hunt for something bigger.

, but it's tempting and the ammo is a whole lot cheaper.
