Argentine 1891 Cavalry Carbine

Last winter, I had the fortune of acquiring a matching and nearly complete Mauser Modelo Argentino 1891 Cavalry Carbine, and thought I'd share some pics. It appears that the only thing missing is the scrubbed model name, but the rest of the gun's features speak for the pedigree. Not too many matching ones around.
Also, this is not the cut down 1891 rife, nor the Engineers Conversion of the 1930's era. It's chambered in 7.65 X 53. Notice it was also built with only one sling loop on the rear. There are some references to it originally being equipped with a saddle ring, but I have yet to see one while cruising the net.
I needed to spend some time cleaning it up - Bluing is all but gone above the wood line, but fortunately there was no major rust, nor other damages besides moderate pitting. I got a pleasant surprise when I took the a damp rag to the crud on the stock. It's a tiger eye (and not a tiger!) - some angles it looks like straight wood, and other angles show the stripes.
Bore is nice, and I found a zip-lock bag in a C&R shop - full of old ammo for it. I'll need to pull the bullets, clean the corrosion and reload if I want to shoot it though. But at least I have the original brass.
Enjoy.

Now that's a carbine. I will have to dig out my Spanish carbine later today, it is converted to 7.62X51, shoots well and kicks more than an M38.

I don't know....there is something that just appeals to me about that carbine.
Very nice looking rifle, and like JYD said, I'll bet it's built like a tank.
Thanks for the photo look!

It is built extremely tight, Dolk. And as a fellow with a stalky stature, I find that it is one of the best shouldering and sighting guns in my stable - I just haven't fired it yet.
The majority of the original 1891 Cavalry Carbines that I've located in pictures have the crest, which is just the opposite situation of the infantry long rifles. Mine, however, is the only one that I can find that has a scrubbed "Mauser Modelo Argentino". No explanation for that circumstance.
Someday, I'll get bored and research some light to medium loads. I can only guess, but I'll bet it shoots as good as it feels, and that is sweet.
And love to see those other carbines, LC and JYD. Brand new forum, plenty of room available to fill it up with new topics!

The 1895 is currently sleeping in cosmoline, but the Persian Mauser carbine is in the rack with my other regular use rifles, I can shoot some pics of that later if I haven't got some already. I had it posted on the old forum along with most of my collection, I still have the pics someplace.

What a beautiful Mauser! the Argentine Mausers have a reputation of being some of the best made from what I have read. I love the look of that cavalry carbine...fantastic!

Thanks again, all. I only have three Mausers, and I like them all equally, but this one seems to get the best reception from collectors.

Theze seem like the perfect candidate for handloaded cast lead bullets. Beautiful carbine!

I picked up a ziplock bag full of corroded 7.65mm last spring, so I do have 80-100 casings available. The rounds look too dangerous to try as they are. When (or if!) I ever get ambitious, some handloads will be the ticket.
