Removing rear sight
What is the best way to remove the rear sight. I have driven the pins out that hold it on and I tried tapping it with a rubber mallet but I couldnt get it to budge. I have heared that some are soldered on and have to be heated. What is the best way to do this without damaging the finish on the rifle and how much force should it take to get the sight off?
Re: Removing rear sight
Why are you taking off the base? They are soldered on and basicly you would ruin it if you took it off.

Re: Removing rear sight
I am wanting to take it off to try puting a scope on it. I want to do it in a way that can be put back to original and have seen a couple mounts that go on the sight block through the holes where the pins were.

Re: Removing rear sight
I think those mounts mount over the sight block, they use the pin holes to attach the scope mount, the sight base is retained in place.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Yes they do. I've been told they don't really hold zero that well. Leave it as it is and you'll have a lot more fun. One reason you won't get a lot in the way of help with this is even though it's not a permanant alteration this isn't something we discuss here. The Board index has under each forum title this applies to "Preservation forum, please no altered military surplus rifles or discussions on altering in this forum. Please read the rules at the top of each forum " We're just crazy about them the way they are.Junk Yard Dog wrote:I think those mounts mount over the sight block, they use the pin holes to attach the scope mount, the sight base is retained in place.

I appoligize if I have posted this in the wrong spot or have offended anyone. I have a red dot scope and i read somewhere that you could remove the rear sight base and mount the scope to the sight block. the reason I dont want to buy one of the other mounts is I just want the scope on temporarily to check different loads. I dont want to leave the scope on the rifle just use it cause I can ahoot a lot better with it and I thought I could get better results for longer range load testing.

Re: Removing rear sight
By sight block do you mean what is left after you remove the flip up sight , or are you trying to remove the entire rear sight so there is nothing left but the bare barrel?

For longer range testing you should utilize a pistol scope instead of the red-dot. Consider buying a Scout Mount for your scope setup. It does mount to the base so you won't have to rip the whole thing apart. And better yet, when your done using it you can re-sell the mount & get most if not all of your $$$ back.
The best on the market sells here... Scout Mount worth every penny. I've seen them sell on the traders used for the same or more so you could definitely get your money back if you ever decide to sell it.

Re: Removing rear sight
by the sight block i mean the part that is attached to the barrel that is left after the 2 pins are driven out and the entire rear sight romoved. I will also look into the scout scope mount. I also thought one of them would be better but I already had the red dot scope so I thought I would try it first. Thanks for the info.

Nice answer Rongo, another Mosin saved from possible Bubbaing (what is the verb form of Bubba'd?) and possibly a new regular forum member.

Re: Removing rear sight
Yeah no need to appolgize. We've had a fair amount of new users asking about doing modifications of one type or another and it's a tender subject here. Other than that you'll get more help then you could ever imagine here. I find myself being especially sensitive to it because I visit a bunch of other forums and see all kinds of modifications to these rifles that make me cringe.countryboy3006 wrote:I appoligize if I have posted this in the wrong spot or have offended anyone. Re: Removing rear sight
As I sit and ponder, why not a red dot on a scout scope mount? A 3MOA dot with the proper eye relief on a scout scope mount could be fun. Use a 6" dirty bird style stick on target at 100 yards. I find that my old eyes do much better with a circle in a circle. This may just give me an idea. Hmmmmm.
