Finnish High Wall M 91/30

Post by mebailj »

Picked up this Finnish M91/30 at my local gun dealer. It has a mismatched bolt, but the bolt looks original and has mostly old hammer Tula markings. Arsenal replacement? The barrel is mirror mint. It had some almost black stuff in it. A couple of passes with a bush and some patches an it cleaned up like new. Could this be not fired since imported? Could the bolt somehow be original to the rifle? It has the rough high wall receiver. My text by DiRisio says there weren’t many high wall receivers used in M91/30 production.

Not many high walls used to build Finn 91/30's. The Finn's captured huge amounts of Soviet equipment during the Winter War of 1939-40, this was before the advent of the high wall receivers. The Continuation War rolled around in 1941, but by that time the Red Army was starting to get their shit together and while weapons were captured it was not in the huge numbers seen previously. The often rough looking wartime receivers probably didn't look all that appealing to Finnish armorers who had plenty of earlier clean receivers to work with. Nice find.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Finland didn't make mosin bolts but renumbered older ones to match when they made "new" rifles with Finn barrels. Id guess that the bolt was swapped out at some point if it's not Finn matched. No numbers on the bolt knob?

No, no numbers except
the number 1046 on the bolt body. It is upside down when viewed closed. I haven’t checked head space yet. Will do before firing. Entire bolt has the same finish. Aged, but good!
