Try checking the websites for Sierra, Speer, and Hornady. Might be that you may have to cast a similiar lead bullet of that type instead, but if anybody still makes a .311 long round nose bullet, its most likely one of the three I mentioned.

Are you specifically talking about the ammo that was used in the very early Mosins, prior to the Spitzer bullet? I have searched for a original box of the early ammo, but no luck so far. The bullets used for reloading these is the same used for the. 303 British. While it is a. 311 diameter bullet, our late friend Kari who passed away about 16 months ago was a avid handloader and he had great results with. 308" bullets in the x54r rounds. 150 gr Sierra was his favorite I think

If the .308 diameter will work, wouldn't the 180 through 220 grain round nose bullets approximate the original loading closer? 150 seems light for an 1891 era bullet.

Definitely. The 150 gr. Bullets that Kari loaded were not round nose. I was just mentioning that he had good results with them at 100 yards. The shorter range loads he talked about were the flat bottom Spitzers known as Sierra Game Kings. For longer range targets out to 200-300 yards he preferred boat tail bullets. I would like to find some .312 Hornady Interlock rn bullets in the 174 gr lineup for the .303 British, and .3105 for the Mosin rounds.

The current Hornady reloading manual lists the Russian Cartridge as 7.62X53R for the .308 diameter bullet load data and 7.62X54R for their .311 and .312 diameter bullets. In the .312 diameter they have a 174 grain round nose soft point. Their load data is for a lot of different powders but the ones I use the most are IMR-4064 and IMR-4895 with these you can push that big bullet to 2600FPS and that isn't bad speed for that size bullet. So check out the Hornady reload manual it should help you do what you want to do. Myself I shoot a lot of .311 150 grain bullets in my Mosin's.

the original bullets were 210 gr FMJRN at 2200 fps which kicks like a Tennessee mule and will drop a bull elephant , sometime after the russo war they switched to 148 gr spritzer for higher velocity and flatter trajectory , brown bear makes a good 205 gr Kodiak killer load for cheap and will do the job on anything that walks or crawls this continent , it is real close to the original load in terms of power and kick ..

You got my interest up on this idea of loading a round nose bullet and I have some 174 grain ones I bought for my 1891 Argentine Mauser so I might give this a try in one of my 91/30's or my M39's. If I do I'll post results.

I have loaded the Hornady 174 grain round nose (.312) bullet in .303 British. It was a real accurate load in my No. 1 Mk III. I have not tried it in the 7.62x54r, but I see no reason why it should not work real well in the Mosin Nagant. I know a guy who loads this bullet for a sporterized .303 Enfield and he said it was absolutely devastating on deer size game at close to medium range (100-200 yards).

I can believe that, I shoot it in my 1891 Argentine Mauser and it does do well. I have to try it in my SMLE's as well as the 91/30.

Those 220gr rn bullets make some nice looking rounds. I am working up some new 185gr cast loads that I intend to do a report on soon.

I don't cast bullets, so that is not an option for me, unless I want to buy cast bullets. I just ordered the 174 Grain Hornady Round Nose, so I will try them in the 7.62x54r. I know they are an excellent bullet in the .303 Brit.
