M38 Sestroretsk

Post by Vity »

I got really interesting piece. it's M38 made from 1909 Sestroretsk rifle. It has original m91 stock which was cut. It looks like 91/59 carbine, but doesn't have double dates. There is number 5 on the barrel, not sure what it means. Also it has cut on the right side of the stock like m44. Nice rifle with interesting history.

No, not a 91/59, as they were made from cut down 91/30 actions , what you have is the M91/38. M91/38 carbines were made post WW2 by turning old M1891 rifle actions into M38 type carbines. This is a very nice find. :vcool:
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Czechoslovakia was long considered the source for these carbines but no real documentation has surfaced. Within the last few years Bulgaria has also become suspected as a source for them as most of the stocks have Bulgarian style rectangular proof stamps near the buttplate. The jury is still out.

I have m91/59 and bluing is different on both carbines. M91/59 looks more shiny. The bluing on this carbine is looks like on any standard russian refurbished gun.
