Albanian Bullet Pull

Post by ko4nrbs »

Purchased several hundred rounds of Albanian 7.62X54R many years ago and have never been impressed with it. The brass necks split fairly often and it's not very accurate in my M91. Decided to break down and pull the bullets and install my .312 diameter bullets as they are very accurate in my rifle. While I was at it, I measured the powder charge in several of the cartridges and found it to be between 46 and 47 grains. It's a stick type powder and pours very easily. I will go with 46 grains of this powder with the .312 bullets and see how they shoot.

Hopefully I can salvage the ammo this way so I can have better accuracy and consistency. The brass is not worth messy with. A lot of it comes out to the spam can pretty beat up.

In order to allow for the larger diameter bullets, you have to use the larger expander to enlarge the neck some. I did it by easily by stopping just short of where the die's primer pin contacts the primer. If you don't do this the .312 diameter bullets cartridge necks will crush. They are not very strong.

It is corrosive so the rifle must be cleaned up with that in mind.

I remember that Albanian ammo, some of it looked like the workers were beyond wasted when they made it. Despite the appearance it did shoot well as plinking ammo, and I never had a case failure. I still have a spam can of it put away, the packets had very colorful string around them for some reason. I shot it in everything, but not for accuracy, not with my crap eyesight, plinking fun on the cheap. Cheap at least back then 12 years or more ago.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
