Leather ammo pouches and humidity

Post by Tula44 »

It's been a pretty active Monsoon season here and for a couple of weeks we have had humidity. I've noticed on one of my ammo pouches the leather strap is starting to have that white layer of mildew. What do you guys do to prevent / keep it from coming back? Living in the desert humidity isn't much of an issue but lately it has been.

Maybe put them in a ammo can with desiccant, after cleaning them. Being in Florida with high humidity I haven't had any issues with this happening.

I'll have to try that, thank you! Here in AZ there is not much humidity throughout the year but this year the Monsoons have been bad in parts of the state. If it works for you in Florida then it has to work here lol!

I store all leather gear in sealed 20mm USGI ammo cans with desiccant packs. It will help to set the leather out in the sun for a day. Sunlight kills mold.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

On the same subject, if you ever put any Wolf zinc case ammo in an ammo pouch and put it away, that shit is now corroded. If it's not real bad it will wipe off.

I think my one pouch is a lost cause. I've cleaned the pouch multiple times, let it sit in the sunlight, kept it with a dehumidifier and nothing has worked. The other pouches I cleaned are doing well though.

Also live in AZ. Go to any tack shop and buy a good leather restorer. Works well on anything leather.
