S&W Model 28 .357 Highway Patrolman

Post by tjtM38 »

I just acquired this today from my local gun dealer. It's a 1962 manufactured S&W Model 28 .357 Magnum Highway Patrolman with a 6" barrel. I know the approximate year of manufacture, because I looked up the serial number in my S&W Master Catalog. It has a pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. The finish is 95%. It has been fired but not much. I took the side plate off and the guts of the gun are pristine; just needed a drop or two of oil. Bore is perfect. From what I understand, these were the largest .357 Magnum revolvers S&W built, because they utilize the larger N Frame like the Model 29 .44 Magnum. I gave $750 for it; not cheap, but any 28 on Gunbroker is commanding premium prices; many over $1000. The grips are Pachmyr, so I will be looking for some premium wood for this beauty.

Very nice.

Very nice   :vcool: The .38/44 comes to mind as another S&W that used what would be the N frame, probably the strongest .38 specials to be made before the Ruger GP100, and Blackhawks.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

It's funny that this was the plain Jane version of this revolver. The Mod 27 was the high polish version. This "Plain" model is nicer than anything made today.

I was able to find a factory original box for the S&W Model 28 on EBay. It was not cheap. I put a replacement label on it.

Sweet looking example there. I normally don't pay attention to commercial firearms, maybe it's time I do.

That is a real fine revolver there. 750.00 seems like a good buy these days

You stole that S&W at that price.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I got some nice Altamont Company's classic panel wood service grips from a seller on EBay. For replacement grips, these were a perfect match with the gun's factory satin finish. If I could just find a genuine 6" cleaning rod for .38/357, I think my box contents would be complete.
