What is this? Izhevsk 1943 strange rifle
Hi guys,
I was looking at this rifle and it’s very controversial. Sanded stock is obvious, missing rear sling escutcheon, replaced rear glass on the scope, because it’s chromatic, replaced bolt & buttplate.
But. The rest seems surprisingly fine. No import marks. At all. Nowhere. But front of the barrel has different finish than the rest - scrubbed to remove import marks?
What is this?

That stock has some strong Eastern European vibes, really resembles the stocks on “unissued” Polish M44s.
Re: What is this? Izhevsk 1943 strange rifle
Agreed, it also has 59B stamp and an E on the inner surface.House Beagle wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 6:39 pm That stock has some strong Eastern European vibes, really resembles the stocks on “unissued” Polish M44s.
Something that’s not present on normal Russian stocks.

If you show me the import marks on that rifle, I'll tell you what I know about that rifle.
Miller, is that a brazed on end on that cleaning rod? LOL
I might just leave this one to Miller!

No import mark Darryl. Nothing. Completely.
Cleaning rod doesn’t seem to be yugo.

I saw it yesterday Dolk and really want to give it a good once over when I get home this evening, but the stock doesn't look sanded from the one pic I saw of the finger groves. The type of wood and color, pluss the rear sight in the white leads me to lean towards a Polish refurb.

Yes, I was just kidding (Miller) about the cleaning rod and trying to throw him off! LOL.Sorry, I messed up the original poster too.Miller Tyme wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 4:36 amI saw it yesterday Dolk and really want to give it a good once over when I get home this evening, but the stock doesn't look sanded from the one pic I saw of the finger groves. I have a M44 with the same exact characteristics as this rifle. It is a Izhevsk 1944.
And it is a Polish refurbished rifle also.
But, this is the first "sniper" Polish refurb I have seen (that I can remember!
.
On mine, there is a purple stamp on the lower stock in the channel that the barrel sits in. It is on many of the Polish refurbished rifles. But , not on all of them. It is in "Polish" and is the Month and date (as I remember now?).

There is some purpleish something at the border with speculation
the same E in a diamond is present on the stock butt. so is it somewhat rare thing?
Any idea why no import marks?
Also not sure if that’s relevant, but on your rear sight notches between numbers aren’t present + it’s marked up to 1000m. vs 2000m

"Rare" is a word that is used way too much. It is "hard to find" but not impossible to find Polish refurbs. In "sniper" config, like I said, this is the first one I've seen. So, damn hard to find!Rtop01 wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 11:08 am There is some purpleish something at the border with speculationthe same E in a diamond is present on the stock butt. so is it somewhat rare thing?

That purple stamp is the give away.
The diamond E is different from mine.
I have a O in a diamond and also a C in a diamond on the stock.
Very interesting rifle.

Re: What is this? Izhevsk 1943 strange rifle
More pics of the rifle are needed, the whole rifle, most of the pics are of the scope, but I stand by my belief that it "might" well be a Polish refurbed PU.
I have one and this one bears some similarities to it, but with out better pics it is just MHO.
Here is a Polish refurbed PU sniper from my collection, it is in a refurbed Russian stock, the OP's appears to be a Polish Beechwood stock.

Re: What is this? Izhevsk 1943 strange rifle
While both Poland and Hungary used beech stocks but the Hungarians used full sling slot liners. The deep bluing, including the front sling slot 1/2 liner, the pristine beech stock (no 02 mark, and it hasn't been sanded), the rear sight in the white (never seen it on a Hungarian PU) make me believe this is a Polish refurbed PU.
