Hi guys,
I just bought mosin PU sniper 1943 (refurb, rifle and scope) all factory match including the scope, (electro pencil mount).
(kazan factory #237 1943 scope)
Everything seems correct to me but,
Do you ever seen one scope with a copper color rear objective piece? That's the only thing that bug me.
Thanks!

That part is normally painted black. Maybe somebody removed the paint. I'm with everybody else, I've never seen that.
If you remove the paint (on some of them at least), they are brass or Aluminum. Not copper. Well, not usually. Never seen copper, but maybe they used what they could get at the time.
I'd say it is probably "original" IF, it is copper and not "plated copper".
If plated, it could be original but also could be done later (like here in USA).
But if solid copper, then it must be original. I doubt anyone would build one of these eye pieces today from copper. Too expensive..
It is a first for me. And if Miller says the same, then it is a real oddity.

No, I don't think so. I think I laid it out above.
NO one would have gone out and made one of those eye piece in copper. Not in these days. It was made back then. Why is the question. The rest of the scope looks correct to me. The copper is just "odd". Like I said, maybe they ran out of brass or steel ones and had copper.
I'm more inclined to believe it is original made back then. But the question is "why". Certainly I'd buy it off of you!
Darryl
PS:
Can you make brass look like "copper"? I know brass is made of some copper, but can it "turn" to look like that?
That is a good question.

It wouldn't have been hard for Ivan's Siberian machine shop to make that. Heck, I've turned out things like that on a lathe before.

I can not imagine the Soviets wasting copper like that. Hell they don't even use copper in the shell casings. Of course, just because I have a hard time imagining it, does not mean that it is not original. It is interesting.

UPDATE,
I received my rifle today.
The ''copper'' objective seems to be steel cause a magnet stick to it so, it appears to be just a weird steel coloring....
I'm curious to ear you about that too.
I'm looking at the bolt bend and, it look to me like it as been welded, but I can be wrong. As the rifle, bolt, scope all match, how can it be possible?
The wood stock cut for the base seems old to me but, the cuts are not squares, is it normal?

That last photos reminds me of the Molot Snipers that were imported.
Would like to see the import marks.

Hi, here's some pics of the bolt handle.
I quickly tried the rifle in a field this week with reduced loads of trail boss at 100M. Sitting with a shooting stick in the tick snow with a heavy wind. I'm quite impress. Cant wait to test in on the bench soon.

Looking good so far.
Can you send photos of the right side of the barrel shank
and
the import marks on the receiver
and
the scope.
The rest is OK as far as I can tell.
That cap is a odd color, but I was not as concerned with it because who would change the cap on the end of a scope when the rest of the scope is all original and correct. No one. So it was of no concern to me.

Here's the pics.
There's no export markings on the receiver. Only what's look like molot marking on top of the barrel under the handguard.
What are you looking for on the left side?
Thank you for your time!

I screwed up. The left side of the barrel shank. Sorry.
The scope is correct.
The mount is correct
The bolt looks OK.
If I could see the import marks, I'd bet it's a Molot import sniper rifle.

On my computer the bolt handle looks ok, at first it looked on my phone you might have one of the field repaired bolts that Alex posted about. I will try to find the link to it and post it up latter

Could the odd color of the scope part be like the plum and straw color parts we see on other weapons?
Correct me if I'm wrong here or got it back-ass-backwards....
The plum color was caused bad chemical mix/incorrect temperatures during bluing. The straw color was a result of over polishing and the high temperatures during bluing.
