Bayonet Question.....?

Answer me this.......

Was sitting her looking at my Snider-Enfield and its bayonet and started wondering about how they mounted them in the field.

There is a lockring on the bayonet that has a flathead/slotted screw on it. How did they or what did they use to tighten the screw to lock the bayonet on?

Did they have some sort of screwdriver? Use each others bayonets as a screwdriver? I've been sitting here for an hour trying to figure this out. You see in movies (We all know how accurate Hollyweird is) that the give the mount bayonets command, and they just slip them on and rotate them, nothing else.......

Tools in that era weren't generally trusted to the rank and file soldier, likely their NCO had it, but I don't know for sure. You need to research the equipment issued to Victorian era British soldiers, maybe there will be mention of a takedown tool of some sort.

IMA does have a reproduction of the 1853 Enfield sergeants takedown tool , $34 and it does have a screwdriver blade on it. The Snyder was the '53 Enfield with a breech block, so any tools would have been a bit similar.
