Polish TTC at the Range

My 1952-vintage Radom TTC shot very well at 20 yards with PPU ammo. Not bad for a $250 handgun. Powerful, reliable and no malfunctions.

I'm gonna hunt with mine this yr. If a deer is in bow and arrow range then He's in Tokarev range. Do you think the milsurp ammo is more powerful than the PPU ?

Next time I take it out, I have to chronograph this PPU hollow point ammo I was shooting. It seemed like some powerful stuff. Would it kill a deer? I am sure it would, but the bullet is a little light for that application. At my age, I don't think I could stand to shoot one and have it run off wounded. Gotta be a clean kill, and that's a high power rifle for me. Even a good 30-30 lever action Marlin at short range is perfect.

With 85.gr. surplus ball,(@1600) 200' fps. slower than an M1 .30. 25 grains lighter bullet. I'll have a 12 ga. in my hands, but I'm thinking of the times one that have walked up on my right and behind me, easy 10 yd pistol shot, but I'm too old and stiff anymore to turn around and shoot left handed with a long gun. . Thats when the Tokarev would roar. I'm gonna make some milsurp hollow points for the mission. A close ribcage shot and a deer wouldn't get far.

Let me know what that PPU clocks at if you chronograph it. I have plenty of it. The Romanian ammo is evidently steel core so I can't use it.

Roger that. I go to the range about once a week, so I should get to it soon.

Here's the round I was shooting. I haven't chronographed it myself yet, but Privi Partizan indicates the muzzle velocity is the equivalent of 1673 FPS (510 meters per second). That's fast.

So they must have an equal load to the milsurp ammo, same bullet weight. I did a penetration test on some books, the Romanian ball went 4 & 1/2 inches into compressed paper, the PPU hp went in 2&1/2. Thats steel core ball vs. lead hp. When I go back I'm gonna see what a hp 9mm will do, and a .38+P.

I took the Romanian TT33 to the range today and did chronograph testing with 7.62x25 PPU 85 Grain Hollow Point (2 strings of 8 shots) and PPU 85 Grain FMJ (2 strings of 8 shots). Here is a summary of the results:

String #1with PPU HP:
Hi: 1352
Lo: 1280
Avg: 1311
ES: 72
SD: 21

String#2 with PPU HP
Hi: 1355
Lo: 1303
Avg: 1329
ES: 52
SD: 20

String #3 with PPU FMJ
Hi: 1427
Lo: 1345
Avg: 1389
ES: 82
SD: 24

String #4 with PPU FMJ
Hi: 14-06
Lo: 1341
Avg: 1393
ES: 65
SD: 21

Note: Hi is the highest velocity in FPS, Lo is the lowest, Avg is average for the string, ES=Extreme Spread, SD=Standard Deviation from the mean

In conclusion, the test data shows that neither round achieves the stated ballistics provided by PPU on their website, at least not out of my Romanian TT33. I have no idea what firearm, length of barrel, or conditions yielded the PPU data. I tested these rounds at the range at about 230 feet elevation, 75 degrees Farenheit (24 degrees Celsius) and 60% humidity. I thought both loads were consistent running through my 1953 Romanian. The FMJ had a slight edge in velocity and consistency round to round, but not enough to make a big difference in a practical shooting scenario.
