Friend has the metal detecting bug, my son and I have been going out detecting really old places like this pre 1848 ranchero in the mountains. Pics of the house, horse corral, well and the ranchero guy that lived there left his likeness on a boulder. The water table had to have been much higher 175 years ago from the depth of the well. The pic of my son and I was taken when it was getting hot.Arizona has a lot of old places like this hidden away. Something different to look at.

That is a cool place. About the only really old places that survive here are old military forts and they are off limits. With our rain, heat and humidity, I thing even gold would rust up in about six months....

I had the bug a few years ago and would go around the really old churches around here and abandoned schools form the early part of the last century. I would get an occasional coin, but mostly pop-tops, bottle caps, old fence rows and unidentifiable chunks of cast iron. The say that Ponce De Leon came through here a heck of a long time ago, but I think that all that they left was bodily waste.

About 40 years ago, a guy, digging fence holes on his own property, dug up a gold bar. The state fought him for it, but I don't know who eventually won.
(the state probably took it and gave him a token price) If I had found it, no officials would have ever found out.

There's a site I'm a member of Tnet or treasurenet. Lots of good information there, and they have a "What is it" area for helping identify unknown finds.

Old is all around me, just up the road is a house Gen Washington slept in while traveling from NYC to Newburgh were the troops were quartered at the end of the war. I am sitting on top of history, both ancient, and a bit more recent, it's always cool to dig up something and wonder who used it and how it got there. Native American sites are all over the area, colonial era buildings, places with Dutch names, West Point, and even Bannerman's castle.

My ex brother in law did a lot of searching around old homesteads in Northern Ca. He told me that he found old bottles, tins and a couple revolver frames in the remnants of outhouses. He said that was where a man would go to not only do his business but take a few swigs of old panther piss where to old lady couldn't see him. The normal business had long since gone to dust.
