Cabinet Refinish Opinions?

Our original kitchen cabinets (Sawdust on Viagra) were finished in a dark brown (Made the kitchen too dark). When we replaced them with real wood cabinets, we just oiled them to give them some color. Being oiled they dry out over time and need re-oiled every so often, and they really don't have a protective finish on them. Discovered that when our son and his family were staying with us. When cooking they were sloppy and oil was spattered on them and left them stained. Now as we do more repairs we are making some changes.

Well the wife is thinking of painting the cabinets in Navajo White (Off white). Today we started thinking of doing just the doors/drawers in the Navajo White and staining the cabinet frames. Something similar to this.

Pic 1 Example of what we are thinking of.
Pic 2 Example of the stain color.
Pic 3 Example of the stain color compared to the current finish on the cabinets.
Pic 4 Example of Navajo White.

Neither of us have ever been a fan of painted wood, but our house has a "Galley Kitchen" the original dark cabinets made the small kitchen too damn dark, even made it seem smaller, which is hard to believe.

Leave them as is, you will cut the value by 1/2 at least.

Is it the counter top next to the stove? Some ceramic tile on both sides of the stove, same color as the cabinet doors, would that cover it ? It would prevent future stains too.

Pardon the mess in the kitchen, renovations and being tired we didn't clean our mess up today. Here you can see the discoloring of the sinkside doors across from the stove. I don't know what they used to try and clean up the one area, but you can see it left that area almost white. The dark areas in the wood in the picture is not the wood grain, it's actually where the grease/oil was splattered on it and ran.

You can see from the one picture I wasn't exaggerating on it being a SMALL galley kitchen, but it does make for easy and quick cleanup.

Pic 1 Shows the kitchen as it is, you can see the discoloration from them being sloppy.
Pis 2 Shows what the flooring we're putting down looks like (Pic of one of the guest rooms as the wife did her remodeling). So the darker brown flooring will be replaced by the weathered gray flooring.

What mess? Stain them red mahogany and top with shellac. Will match your Mosin refurbs ( most of them) and your Victrola. Not kidding, it would look good, and shellac is easy ( and cheap) to repair.

Oh I get it, you think that kitchen is messy? You want to see a mess in a kitchen just let me loose in there, I can show you how to fuck up a kitchen professionally. Have the fire department standing by. That racoon door would worry me, I have five of the little bastards hanging around outside trying to get the cat food. They are problem solvers, figured out in less than two days that I started feeding the cats at noon, and now they get up in the day to eat, then go back to bed.

Paint, yea, I can really make a good mess with paint. In the furniture and cabinet industry paint is for hiding sins. Sins like cheap wood with crappy grain, or hiding repairs the customer doesn't need to know about.

It seems that your choice of floor is driving your cabinet decision. I guess I'm weird but in the past that is 180 degrees how I would plan the project. Hummm, the door will require work as well. I'd probably have opted for a lighter earth tone floor which would allow for the cabinets to be restained. But, anymore, wives will dictate that earth tones are out and white bright tones are in... Unless you want to paint the cabinets, I think all new cabinets are in your future...

My advice is to go with the finish you wife wants, and if you don't like it, don't mention it.

Yeah the first picture was an example on the scheme she wants, the second one is of our actual kitchen.

Yeap the door took a beating. Drywall from the garage ceiling came through the dog door, through the kitchen and was deposited in the dining room. The door will be sanded, primered and painted white. I've got new trim and window pane for it also. The door is metal, and it still has the faux woodgrain paint on it from when the house was built in 1986.

Luckily the Racoon door goes out to the garage, and the garage door is NOW kept down. Learned my lesson back about 18 years ago......

Lesson one, is when I was working under the car and a possum decided to visit me. I thought it was the cat and reached down to pet it, then it hissed at me. Scared the living hell out of me.

Lesson two is when out then new next door neighbor came banging on the door looking for his MIA pet snake. His frigging 20 foot python had ended up in the garage and was taking a nap. Thank God she wasn't hungry so our cats were spared.

Eventually the garage will be converted, and become the new man cave as the old one is now a playroom for the grand monsters.......

Apparently the kids used something with bleach to try and clean the cabinets, the door under the sink has bleached out wood, granted not all of it from that, some is just the wood used. When we first put them in all we did was use Old English dark wood oil on them. I don't think that the white areas will stain evenly and will end up an eyesore.

Yea, that would have been a real pain in the back having to drag that late neighbors fat ass, and his pet 20' fucking skinless snake back up into the hills so they could spend eternity together. That would have made a nice pair of snakeskin boots, enough left over for a custom snakeskin cover on my humidor.

You'd be styling with your matching boots, belt and humidor, and might have had enough left over for a matching wallet or hat-band, or both! :chuckles:

You have to understand I was born, raised and lived with strick military discipline. I was brought up with the following simple rule "Everything is always in inspection order at all times, no excuses". I lived that life from the day I was born in Dec 66 until I retired in Sept 09.

So if there are dishes in the sink, the kitchen is a mess. What yall don't see is the wine bottles and wine glasses, on one side and pots stacked on another. Can't get to the pots cabinet, scaffolding is blocking it, the wine and glasses will go back up when the shelf goes back up.

Lets see if I got this straight, empty booze bottles strewn about, a special cabinet just for pot that you can't get into so the pot is left out with the bottles...... OK, yea, that sounds like most of the building contractors I know, the ones who stop to drop off scrap metal and the beer cans fall out when they open the truck door.

Mess, your dad would have loved ol' Percy, a retired airline mechanic I knew. He was in his 80's, wife passed many years earlier, he mentioned having a Caddy Rochester quadrajet carburetor new in the box. He knew I had Caddys, he said he remembered bringing that carb home 25 years earlier and putting it on the kitchen table. I asked if he could remember were the carb is now, he said it's still on the kitchen table, he just needed to shift the pile of stuff on top of it.

My dad conducted no shit white glove inspections every Friday. Every Saturday I had to mow the lawn and do necessary lawn cleanup, wash, wax and vacuum the car. My bed was to be made everyday with hospital corners, I had to be up every weekend by 0800, and during the Summer 0800 everyday, showered, bed made, room in inspection order NLT 0845, failure to be ready meant no breakfast.

I arrived at Basic Training on 05 Jan 1986, training started 09 Jan 1986, like everyone else I was in a panic. About 3 days after arriving I figured out, my TI's acted like my dad, and the rules were pretty much the same as dad's. Pissed my TI's off that I wasn't a bundle of nerves, until my lead TI found out my dad was his previous boss......He understood and they just left me alone.......

Thanks dad, he gave me 19 years of prep for Basic Training..........

My kids will tell you I did the same thing to them, room inspections, GI parties, etc.......Apparently I could do a pretty damn good impression of a Marine DI, as my son had no issues dealing with his DI's during Boot......

I have known some serious slobs, hoarders, and a few neat freaks. Ol' Percy, you could give him a chunk of aluminum and he could machine it into a perfect copy of whatever alternator case you had broken, but his house was pure chaos. Years of living alone will do that, while I don't have towering stacks of old newspapers in the corner, there are ammo cans that haven't moved since the Clinton years. At some point you realize that the queen's not visiting today so a stack of books on a chair can stay awhile. Clothing hung on the backs of doors because the closet is stuffed full of cool old shit I bought who remembers when. The other day I was searching in there for another pair of leather gloves when a small copper tea pot tumbled out. Late 18th, or early 19th century, probably worth a fortune, I don't remember buying it, putting it in there, or why, but, cool old shit. That closet would make a neat freaks head explode, I once forgot about a Remington M1903 in there for 18 years. I just call my entire place a cabinet of curiosity's, but at least most of my shit is worth money, some of it a lot of money, no jars of shit, or dead animals.

The barn is just as bad, I sold a late 1800's cast iron spout guard. Something you would find on a copper roofed mansion guarding the entrance to a gutter drain. A fifty dollar item, took me two hours to find it, and when I did it was right in front of me the whole time, but blended in with all the other cool shit. Organizing all that shit would take weeks, months, maybe years, and more comes all the time. I told the mice to get it done, we will see how that works out. The only thing around here neat and organized are my defensive weapons and bugout bag.
