Walked out to check the mail and was greeted by this sight. Thought, damn Tyndall AFB is on fire, well it turns out it is sort of, they are doing a control burn. The are burning out all the dead trees along the runways from Hurricane Michael. The base is about 7.5 miles driving distance, even closer as the crow flies

What is the general condition of Tyndall AFB these days?

A lot of the old buildings on the flight line side are gone or coming down. They'll put all new hangers and maintenance facilities that are designed for Gen 5 aircraft with ability to be upgraded for future Gen aircraft.
Across the highway, same story a lot of the old buildings that have been vacant for years are now gone or coming down. BX and Commissary survived and are operational. Clinic was in the beginning of a remodel, when Michael hit, so the damage just made some aspects of the remodel easier.
The full scale Drones are still operating, and there has been a few weapons meets and exercises since the storm.
All that said Tyndall hosted the F15Es that were evacuated due to Hurricane Isaias, from Seymour Johnson.

ETA: I think base housing was damn near a total loss. Don't know if they are going to gut them and remodel or tear them down and start over. Which is a shame as some of the housing was just went up around 2008.

Mike and I are both surrounded by tens of thousands of acres of planted pines. Mike is about 80 miles from me, and almost all of that is planted pines. Every Spring, all of this stuff is subject to control burns. The control burns get rid of what would quickly become wild fire hazards otherwise. We can go weeks with some degree of smoke, sometimes quite thick. The good side is that there is relative few wild forest fires like one sees in states the do not support control burns. When I see California burning every year, I just can't fathom why they do not control undergrowth the same way.

At least they're dealing with issues proactively. The Beirut explosion is what you don't want (or your local version of it). Of course, the corruption and leadership problems that led to that are now out in the open. Any facility that handles any sort of explosive or dangerous material has to be properly managed. Ammonium nitrate is dangerous when not handled properly. During the investigation of the Texas City explosion in 1947, several longshoremen told the investigators that the bags of ammonium nitrate they loaded aboard the SS Grandcamp were hot to the touch! That should have been a big red flag.
Myself, I'll take a controlled burn versus an uncontrolled burn any day.

In California, we specialize in "uncontrolled burns".
I wish our State people had a little intelligence to understand that.
