The M1951 was designed in the late 1940's and had a limited run in 1953 but didn't go in to full production until 1956 and ran until 1980 when fully replaced by the model 92. This pistol was Beretta's first locked-breech design on the market, previous Beretta semi-automatic pistols, were all blowback operated. The original design had an alloy frame but was not able to withstand the shock of the 9mm round. In 1955 the alloy frame was replaced by a steel frame which was almost 9 oz. heavier than the original alloy design. The 1951 was never sold as a commercial pistol but was sold to the military although it was never used by the Italian Army. This pistol saw heavy use by the Italian Navy, the Carabinieri,(State Police) as well as the Italian National Traffic Police. Several countries around the globe adopted this pistol as their service firearm.

It weighs in at 48 oz. With an overall length of 8 in. and a barrel length of 4.5 in. The barrel has 6 right hand grooves with a 1:10 twist rate. It uses a cross bolt safety positioned just below the hammer in the frame. Its main competitor on the global market was the Tokarev.
