What the heck is it?

I'm new to Russian Rifles. I tried to use the Mosin ID guide. It told me this 1955 40" rifle, no bayonet, 3/4" front sight should be a Soviet M91/38 carbine. The stamps however are hard to read and appear to me to be Chinese. The marks are very faint. So faint that even when I tried to fill them in with white chalk it didn't help much. No import marks.

Is it a sporterized T53? Or Romanian?

I agree with millman. Looks like a sporterized Chinese T53. Stocks cut down, bayonet lug is gone. It's a shooting range or hunting rifle, assuming it shoots ok. I'd check the headspace or have it checked, once again assuming, that it has a bolt

That positively is a sporterized Chinese type 53, the Soviet version is called the M44. These have a swing out attached bayonet that has been removed from your rifle when the stock was cut back.

The import mark was most likely on the now missing bayonet lug.
