Discussion of the SKS platform of semi auto rifles

I read on a local firearm forum that there may be problems with some of the recently available Yugo SKSs available through Cabela's, Big 5, etc. These are the one's that run around $179 on sale. They are now finding that many of these rifles were once demilled, but somewhere along the lines got re-assembled and exported along with functional units. If you have bought a Yugo SKS from Cabela's or similar recently, take it back and have it checked before firing it.
The hole is in the side of the barrel shank and partially below the wood. Unfortunately, it's exactly where your fore hand would be when shouldering the rifle. There hasn't been enough instances to issue a recall, but they are voluntarily checking and exchanging them (the local Cabela's anyway).
Anyone unfamiliar with the SKS could miss this hole and get seriously hurt
I am shocked at the price too That is cheap. But not if it is gonna burn you or worse. Is that your hand? I would SUE

Nope, not me, its a local guy though. I have a habit of tearing down anything I buy before I shoot it. If that would have been my purchase, I would hope I would have caught it, but you never know. I almost bought one of those rifles when they were on sale. Fortunately, Old Outlaw and other forum members sort of talked me out of it. I ended up with the Russian and am obviously happy I did
I read up a bit more on this issue...the Romys and Norincos are OK, it was only a small number of the Yugos that were demilled and re-assembled.
I've heard of one Yugo found locally demilled in that way(found before it was fired), then last night I got an email from Wideners selling brand new Yugo SKS barrels. I wonder if the disassembled demilled rifles and new barrels were bound for the same place to be reassembled and marketed, but something changed that.
Cabelas has had a National recall on a lot their Yugo rifles for several weeks now. Recently, a customer had a cartridge head pull off on extraction.
He said he removed it. Next time to the range he fired a few rounds and the gun blew up entirely. He was not hurt fortunately. Different deal than the pics shown by Wolfy. Owner may have screwed up. But never the less, another Cabelas sale price gun. Cabelas has been calling and notifying everyone to bring their gun in for a total inspection. Goes to prove, you get what you pay for. Beware of the big box store cheapo specials on used Military firearms. Inspection before firing is a must. But if you are not positive what and where to look for a problem, get a qualified gunsmith to do it for you. Safety First.

I would have caught that when disassembling the weapon for cleaning prior to shooting. This is why we say to clean it and inspect any weapon you find before heading to the range. I would be pissed to find that, very pissed.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I just bought one of the Yugo SKS's from Widener's last night and saw the new barrels they had for sale. For a fleeting moment I thought about getting one as a spare but something didn't sit right with me. Thanks for this Cliff, I'll be looking this one over good before shooting it.

Yeah I do. It's nothing special but it's mine. I actually have 8 new rifles coming. I still haven't finished taking pictures og the last 4 Mosin Laminates I got. Been to lazy and the weather is still the pits. I'll get to it.
