Bulged barrel question

Post by House Beagle »

Anyone here ran into the issue of a bulged barrel?

I just acquired a Remington 1903 with a rough bore. When cleaning I noticed a spot about halfway down the barrel where the brush/patch get looser, about a 1/2” long section from what I can tell. There isn’t any external bulge present but when I look down the barrel I can see an area of darkness at that point. I fired the gun at 10 yards and it hits paper, no keyholes. So am I screwed as far as practical accuracy? Wasn’t looking for a match gun but was hoping for something reasonable.

It's called a ring. odd that there isn't an external appearance, but perhaps it's so slight you need a micrometer to tell. Caused by a blockage at the muzzle, the bullet is slowed down for a microsecond, the gas behind it builds up pressure and bulges the steel. Enough of a blockage and it will burst the steel. Most often these rings are found closer to the muzzle, seems you got lucky and it hasn't ruined the rifle, we will never know what it's accuracy was before the incident. The other possibility is rust, it ate a section of rifling enough for you to feel it in that one spot.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
