PE Sniper ?????

Hi Everyone
Picked up this Mosin ‘PE’ ? Sniper this week in Scotland. The very nice man held it for me till I could get up there and I tried to do as much research on PE’s before Traveling up. I think the scope is original, the upper scope mount is stamped with the serial number of the rifle and in the same font I think so Hoping that the mount is original as it ties it to the rifle. It is a 1937 Tula with no CH mark but there is a c in a circle which I have read is possibly a pre war sniper mark. I was informed that this rifle was brought out of Russia approx 35 years ago and had been in this guys sniper collection since then. The collection has now been broken up and I am awaiting more verification on the rifle when the guy gets back from holiday.
Any information regarding the validity this rifle would be greatly appreciated
Thanks
George

While the scope is legit, the base and the rifle are not. The mount also appears to be a reproduction but more pics are needed to determine that. Also the rifle stock is from a latter model Tula rifle.

Many thanks Miller for that info, I will try to get some more photos added of the mount. Also could you please advise of the differences between a correct base and a repro one, is it the screw heads ?

The base lacks inspector makings plus and original base wouldn't have the two " tappings" in the center channel of the base. The mount looks humped to the rifle and the underside of the bolt shows the grinding marks from the clean up of the welds from turning it into a sniper bolt, something the Russians didn't do.
For the right price it would make a nice shooter if you have the itch to shoot a top mount sniper, but collectability is nil.

Many thanks for that very useful information. I thought that would be the case but I got it for a good price and the scope itself was what I really wanted from the set up.

It will be a fun rifle to take to the range without worrying about something happening to a valuable collectors piece.
Enjoy sir.

In any case I wouldn't use that scope as a "shooter"

Why not, its hands down a better scope than any of the current reproduction scopes available.

Personally I would not use that scope as a “shooter” scope. They are plenty of better options that are way better scopes for that cost only a fraction of the price. So for me I would put a collector scope on a collector rifle and use a shooter scope on a shooter rifle but to each their own.
