M1 Carbine acquisition

I just purchased my first M1 carbine (pictures to follow later). I was looking for a WWII dated rifle to add to my small collection and I think I did pretty well. It's a 1943 dated model in excellent condition. Looks to be hardly used, no import marks. It was manufactured by Standard Products. My gun dealer picked it up for me while he was on vacation because he knew I wanted a carbine. He didn't know the manufacturer until he removed the rear site and saw that it was a Standard products made weapon. He already has a full collection of carbines and this one was found at an archery shop, of all places!
While I was expecting to spend over $1000 for a carbine from the era, this one came in a little under that ($650). I'm pretty happy with it but I need to get pictures uploaded.

If it's a non-import all USGI M1 Carbine you did very very well with today's pricing.

War babys have been popular since the war ended, they were being reproduced shortly after the Korean war the demand was so high. Standard products is not near as common as Inland, Saginaw, Underwood, or even Winchester, and in the condition described should have been a $1000+ carbine, He did you a big favor with that one. Now, you will need a bayonet, magazines, magazine pouches including one to slip on the buttstock, sling, oiler, and ammo of course. T handle cleaning rod for show, use a good Dewey rod for normal the T handle is ordinance steel and will wear a muzzle out in time. We wait on the pictures.

Is it saying Standard, or Underwood under that rear sight? Someone did some touch up work on that stock, too much shine, and too smooth, but this is still a thousand dollar carbine. The serial number range is right for Standard, and Underwood was one of the barrel suppliers for Standard. Chances are Standard did the post war upgrade on this one as they were a contractor doing that work . Very nice, take it down and look for S stamps, however other contractors, Underwood mostly, did make parts for the Standard company. So if you see an Underwood U on the triggerguard or something that doesn't mean it's had parts swapped around. Many of the smaller contractors like Standard needed help keeping up with, or starting production and used parts made by the larger, more prolific manufacturer's. GM, and Underwood Typewriter were huge, and well equipped to manufacture massive numbers of small parts, to keep production rolling it was often easier for smaller companys to just buy from the bigger ones, make a few parts themselves, and assemble a finished product than try and make every last piece themselves.

My '43 Standard Produces has an Underwood barrel also. You did well at that price. I picked up mine for $700 a few months back, and thought I did good.

When I visit my Brother in Nevada, I always take my M1 Carbine. That carbine is the most fun firearm I have to fire. So damn light and is just plain fun. Ammo is not a great price, but I load my own, .... so...
Very nice looking carbine and great price! You will love it.
