The Venezuelans did not lose their country to a dictatorship because the lost their guns. People lose their countries when they lose their judgement. There is truth in that a nation gets the government it deserves.

They lost their country due to lack of balls, same reason we will lose ours. They didn't stand up, fight and die like men when the government soldiers came to take their weapons. What was 19 April 1775 all about? What started it? Government soldiers coming to take guns. Bunch of farmers and storekeeper's with little to no military training stood ten feet tall in the middle of a field facing what they absolutely knew was the mightiest army on earth, highly trained crack troops who were well equipped . I know every man on that field knew they were going to die that day, but they stood up to be counted anyway. They had gigantic balls, they stood and took it like men, they dished it back, took more punishment, dished more back, and eventually after horrific suffering they prevailed and bought your freedom. The Venezuelans, like most modern populations, has lost that Don't Fuck With Me spirit that the men of 19 April had. They chose to drop trou and take it up the ass rather than fight for their freedom, now they are paying the price for it, just like we will one day. Sell out your freedom for the hope of a little safely, now the few remaining people who have their shit together will have to kill off the lowest common denominators hired by the government to terrorize the people, and then kill off the sort of fibreless shit that elects such a government to power in the first place.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

The Venezuelan people lost their country to poverty. The poverty rate teetered at 50% when half the population is disenfranchised, impoverished and has a vote, it does not vote for the status quo they vote for the best handout and promise of wealth redistribution. Makes sense for countries to encourage or at least not discourage the poor to move away because the poor will usually vote for the other guy when they stay.

The largest problem in all of Central and South America is corruption in all levels of government. Each new gang of thieves that take over repeat the actions of the ones they replaced. They suck the life out of the people and gut the middle class. What has saved us in the past is that when we have corruption raise it's head in government we try to tamp it down. In our capital city, last week, one of the longest serving and respected city commissioners got slapped with a huge Federal indictment, the old boy is going to go to the can for all kinds of receiving bribes for votes. When that happens in South America, it is just accepted as the way business is done.
