You know you're going to have a long winter when you can go ice fishing in mid November.
Yup a good solid 3-3.5 inches of ice on Wildhorse lake.Didn't catch any but did have one good bite.
Still nice to get out tho.

Beautiful backdrop. It’d be hard to telephone fish in that pond, though.
Can y’all use a Yo-Yo?

3" of ice between you and the abyss? Not nearly enough for me, 3' maybe, 4' would be better. Never much cared for fish, no way in hell I would freeze my ass off standing on ice, and probably falling in it, just so I could eat fish. Now if there were bacon cheeseburgers with crispy fries getting hooked out of there I would be all over that

Bacon cheeseburgers.... yummy.
As soon as we get 14-16 inches I'll drive my F150 on the lake.My old Ranger was good to go with only 12 inches.
Anyway you see how long my auger is and something tells me I'll have to put an extension on it before the end of winter.
btw... I started using that Stihl pre mixed 50:1 fuel and that auger starts on the first pull now.

I use that premix in my Stihl 290, I don't use the saw for most of the year so it's important not to have ethanol fuel in it even if it is $5 for 32oz.
I remember the story of somebody finding a couple of cars at the bottom of a lake someplace, both filled with skeletons. Both cars thought the ice was thick enough....it wasn't

Happens every year... Yes even up here..
Years ago I broke a prop on my boat motor... Come to find out I hit the roof of a 1930's something car in Mitchells bay in Lake StClair.
It boils down to using your smarts... Sad to say that it's lacking in todays people.

Yup. Even lakers are better through the ice. I was waiting for Steve to ask how you chopped a hole big enough to cast in, but you spoiled it and showed the hole in your pic. We have another week or two before I might try the ice. My son is leaving me his ice fishing stuff, he's moving to southern Indiana. I might have to try it out. Looks like I might get the motorcycle he bought to fix up and never did, too. It needs the carbs rebuilt and something to replace the front fairing. One of those 'round tuit' tasks....

Now, if you could "Ice cheese burger and fry" fish, then JYD would be right there.
Never seen ice on top of water here in California. We just fish (where you can) all year round...in WATER!.

Holy smokes I've been lazy lately,I haven't been out since the first week in Dec.
Oh well so anyway I was given one of these JawJacker fishing contraptions for Christmas.I heard that they are pretty good for setting the hook when the bite is light.Well today I tried it out,one bite one fish so I guess I'm batting 100%.
Temp. was 29F and there was no wind, sun felt nice and warm on my back.

Last time I was here the ice was about 8 inches thick and now it was 20+ inches. If I knew that I would have driven my truck out instead of walking out.
Still was nice to get out tho.

Cool rig. I assume the pole goes SPROING, and sets the hook. I wouldn't want to be looking down the hole if it went off and missed.

I don't fish anymore but here n Ohio they have "pay lakes". You have to pay to fish, catch and release, for mostly shovelhead catfish, (My last Harley was a Shovelhead ???). My other half at the gun shop Ron goes out and spends all night fishin' for big cats, 30, 40 pounders. One last year damn near filleted his arm when he reached in its mouth to get the hook out and it clamped down and with no one around it dangled on his arm until he could get a good smack on its head and get it to release. I told him to add a 5 lb mallet to his gear.

Sonny, you don't have a tent or a shed to put over that hole? I would get enough fishing really quickly in that kind of cold.

Blue skys, sunshine,no wind and a Thermos of hot chocolate.Thats the ticket to a winters day.
Lots of folks stay inside to much in the winter and end up getting.
" SAD"..

For millman…. yes theres a warning on the jawjacker saying to keep face clear of rod.I think could hurt big time if it went SPROING in your face.

inches two, it will hold you...inches three, you and me, inches four ?
