AK bayonet

Post by SA1911a1 »

I went on a "junket" today and scored about a dozen knives. One that is really interesting is an AK bayonet. What is interesting is what I take to be a date on the scabbard: 1946/1. I am assuming this is an early Soviet bayonet but I would appreciate any help from you guys.

Edit: I also picked up an M-1 Carbine bayonet. I know nothing about these and hope someone can spread some light on it, especially the time frame. This has hard rubber scales and sits in a M8 (not M8A1) scabbard. Thanks in advance for any help.

Cool find, but it looks like a typical 1970's-80's Soviet bayonet/wire cutter. In any event 1946 is just a bit early for the AK, the design was approved in 1947, and they lagged in production, they were still making M44's in 1947.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

You are absolutely right Jim. I was being myopic about the number being a date and it screwed up my research. That is a AKM Type II as used by East Germany. The Soviets did not begin making the non-conductive sheaths until the late '60s when their plastics technology advanced to the point that they did not have to make the metal sheaths and then provide the rubber skirt. In any case, I got a bit of a bonus with this one being E. German, they bring about double the price as the Romanians and I only paid $15.00 for the bayonet.

I had a good day on the junk trail and scored a nice handful of oldies. The pocket knives were a real bargain as I averaged paying about $5.00 a piece for them. One of them is a nice little Boker Tree Brand. For your viewing pleasure, this is what I brought home. I had to work hard for them as the heat index was about 100 on Sat. One German made fixed blade is missing from the pic as my son took a shine to it.

Worth noting that a few different countries produced black Type 2 AKM bayonets.

Here's a link to a good reference of all things stabby.....
