Did Some Shooting Today!

Went back to WeldenHunter's place today. We had a great time shooting. He worked on dialing in his Garand and SKS with great results. I was working on my 91/30, did shoot my friend's M44, that one will need some work, but I did not want to mess with his sights. Had some great (for me) results with my 91/30, on the picture of the target, that is over 50 rounds at roughly 50 yards. I am pretty sure the 3 shots on the left out of the target were from another gun.

My ammo bag was a LOT lighter on the trip back. But there was some extra weight in my trunk, thanks again Weldon for the great ammo deal! And I fully endorse the Limbsaver recoil pad. The last time I shot, I shot probably half as many times and had a sore arm for several days. I shot a lot of 7.62x54R today, and can barely feel it!

Will get a couple of picts up, then am off to boil some water and do some gun cleaning!

Hope you all have a great weekend. Go shoot some targets! :toast:

A pile of guns and ammo, a friend to shoot with. Now all you need is a cold beer. Doesn't get much better than that. :toast:

I'm just ducking my head in taking a break from cleaning. I've finished the Mauser and am on the M44. I already did the boiling water a little while ago. I have lots of pictures so be patient and I'll get them up in a little while. Cleaning comes first. Oh and Fred_G didn't mention we blew stuff up today too. That was a bit harder than you'd think with open sights.and we had them at about 60yds. No pictures of the acutal explosions but we have smoke clouds. We only used 1 pound and I broke it up into three targets. I used empty chewing tabacco tins for two of them and the rest was all in one, about 3/4 of a pound. Big explosions but hard to hit those tins but we did and with irons sights. Oh and one word to the wise. Youu definitely need to use something that has 2400fps velocity. I hit one of the tins almost dead center using the SKS and it didn't explode. Luckily most of the explosive was still in the tin even after a through and through with Ulyanovsk 123gr FMJ. I just put the rest in a new tin and if I remember Fred_G shot it. I shot the big one and the smoke cloud was so big I had time to put the rifle down get the camera out of the case turn it on take a piture. Here's a small tin smoke cloud that Fred_G shot. More pictures including targets to come.

No idea. My uncle gave me the gun. He has the original bolt cover and as soon as he finds it it's going back on the rifle and that piece of crap is coming off. I shot the thing for about 30 minutes adjusting and adjusting and finally got it on the paper but was still all over the rings with 3 or 4 inch patterns. SKS bolt cover mounted scopes do not work. The bolt cover is not staticly mounted and has some play in it on an SKS so to mount a scope to it even if you choose to tighten the side screws into the reciever and mare the crap out of it they don't hold. I was so frustraed with it I finally decided to shoot using the irons sights. You can use either with this setup. Well first shot was a bullseye. Who needs a scope when you can do this without one?

With scope while dialing in at 50yds. Center shots are the best it would do.

One shot with iron sights shot out of frustration at 50yds.

Nice shootin' Mike! Yeah, you need to dump that scope. You're shooting better without it anyway :)

Looks like a good day!

Those skoal cans were hard to hit! I got 2 of them out of 17 shots. We would have made the world's most boring video if he had more memory on his camera, or I had more battery! I was surprised the SKS did not hit it hard enough.

It is great how both of us are getting more accurate. I am going to get some larger targets, and next time, maybe we will shoot a few at 100 yards. Plus WeldonHunter hooked me up with a few dozen freshly laid eggs, I am off in the morning to buy some bacon and cheese, omelet time...

Thanks again Weldon, I had a great time, look forward to the next one. Will have my own Mauser then...

Sounds and looks like a great time! Love the "green"! We got a foot of snow last night. I really want warm weather, as it increases my own range time.

Smart on dumping the SKS scope. I fooled around with that many years ago, and they just do not hold up.

Well I'd like the gun to be original but I also like having something with a scope. Especially since it's not a permanent modification but as I said and you know they just don't really work. My eyesight is getting so bad these days it's nice being able to see what you're shooting at clearly though. I haven't shot the Mauser for more than a year and the last 3 shots have been to take down deer over the last 4 years. The sights in that thing are so hard to see it's unbelievable. I wanted Fred_G to get a feel for what he's getting when his comes Monday. Oh and Rob I got the Garand shooting pretty good. Watch this thread for the pictures of where it is on the paper now. I was able to get it in better than it was. It's still not perfect but with the trigger guard and new sight I got from you it's at least in bullseye range if I use a 6 Oclock hold. That's only at 50yds so it may get better further out but it's still got problems. The rear sight is all the way down still so I have no elevation adjustment unless I need to take it up. It's centered now and we'll see how it does at 100yds next time. I'm also going to order some Orion 7 SS Op rod springs like you suggested. I have to get a few because they require a minimum purchase but having a few for spares won't hurt. Here's a picture of the target at 50 yds. and remember the 3rd set is holding at 6 oclock to get it in the center. It was 8" to 10" above the outer most ring before so we're making progress. More pictures to come tomorrow with better explainations. That is before or after the Daytona 500.

One possible reason for not being able to get the Garand sight low enough is the Op Rod rubbing on something, the stock ferrule is a good place to look. Probably other possibilities but that was the issue with mine. Just a thought.

Yeah I'm working on that too. The Op rod is rubbing slightly and that's going to be addressed before the next shoot hopefully. I'm posting some more pictures below with a better explaination of what I've done so far. This gun has problems I'm working through and thanks for the pointers. Rob has been real patient with me and suggestions from him and people like you who actually have one and have had the problems I'm seeing are invaluable. I've researched this extensively and it's a common problem that has many possible fixes. I'm a member of the CMP forum and some other military forums and I've seen this problem a lot.

Ok I'm getting caught up around here. Cleaned all the guns last night. Here's some more pictures of the shoot. This first one is a picture of the Mosins and the one VZ24 Mauser I have. I'm putting the pictures up in the order I took them.

This is the Bench we're using for now until we can make a better one. It gives a better perspective of the field we're shooing in.

This is a picture from the targets back to the bench.

This my first attempt at getting the Garand in the rings. I had problems with it on the last shoot. It hadn't been shot for maybe 15 years and I had only done a cursory cleaning and lube of the rifle. I also got a bag of parts from Rob that helped out. You can see it's in the rings now at least where the last shoot it was 8"to 10" above the outer most ring. That's with the rear sight elevation all the way down and at 60yds as apposed to 50yds this time. In the bag of parts Rob sent me there was a Gas tube with a different sight which as it turns out was within .001" of the height of mine. That pretty much ruled out that mine had been filed down. One suggestion Rob also made was maybe the stock didn't fit correctly or the trigger wasn't pulling the receiver tight enough to the stock. The trigger gaurd he sent was in better shape than mine so I replaced it as well as putting his sight on which was slightly taller. All of this coupled with a good cleaning and lubing some key points on the rifle made quite a bit of difference. This was the first clip.
Image

This a picture of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd clips that I already posted with a better explaination. On the second clip I zeroed the windage and realised that I had a click or two I could take the elevation down and you can see it's slightly lower. On the third I had centered the front sight better and used a 6 o'clock hold on the target. It still needs work and as I stated before I'm ordering some Orion7 stainless steel op rod return springs on Robs suggestion and will install one. I feel this is really a good idea because it's still a bit weak rechambering rounds and actually stovepiped one real bad and actually smashed the round so bad it's now useless. I'll be doing some work on the wood as well. We'll see how it works after that and go from there.
Image

Here's a picture of Fred_G shooting the M44 he brought with him.
Image

This was done by the concusion of shooting a carbine to close to the homemade rest. The rifle was shorter than he was used to shooting and though it was above the bag the concusion killed the bag. He did not shoot the bag.
Image

I believe this is the first group with the M44 Fred Brought.

More pictures after the race.
