Honda EB3000 generator 1980's

Post by Junk Yard Dog »

I picked up two vintage Honda generators at one of the nearby storage locker places. They auction the lockers if someone fails to pay the rent, friend of mine bids on them. He sold me the generators for a couple hundred for both. The little 650 is running but I have to adjust the speed, the 3000 is done. This one has low oil shutdown and idle down technology, both advanced for the 80's. I thing this one is probably 1986-1992 as the older ones had white gas tanks, still has the flathead engine, and probably breaker points. I had to clean the carburetor and replace the idle screw that had been overtightened and broken. Honda has great parts availability even for stuff pushing 35 years old, Babbits had the parts, and now everything it working just fine, ran it for two hours today under load, no problems. Do I need another generator? No, but I love buying this stuff on the cheap and fixing it myself. Eb's are still in enough demand that this is a $300-$400 generator should I decide to sell it, it seems to have spent most of it's life sitting around.

They do have good parts. I used to buy, repair and resell Honda bikes. The only one that was real trouble was my '73 Trail 90. I still have it and finally have a new mfg. carb to put on it.

Behind it in the shed are two more waiting to be worked on, big 1970's Onan 5500, and another 4000 80's vintage green Coleman. Carburetor issues and maybe points or coil for the Onan. I had the Onan opened up in November then we had a disaster that afternoon and I never got back to it. It was spinning over but not lighting off.

I have my Dad's old ES3500 with the white gas tank like you mentioned. It is a belt drive and if I remember
he bought it around 1980 give or take a year. Flat head engine and breaker point ignition. Still cranks on
the first pull till the temperature gets to freezing then it takes two pulls. Weights over 200 lbs. with a full tank
of gas. 10 horsepower engine on a 3500 watt generator, none currently made like that.

Those are good generators and they hold their value because of it, I always keep an eye out for any older Honda generators when I am doing the flea markets.
