Friday morning my younger son, Red, and I went down to the LGS and he picked up a DPMS Oracle for $399. It is the first gun he bought, he's 19 (Mine was an 870, about 3 months after I turned 18) and I couldn't be prouder. His brother bought a DPMS Sportical three years ago, took four deer with, but decided he wanted an Axis again, and his 870 back so we traded, so I have an AR now, too.
Unlike his brother, Red actually wanted to know how to clean it, and bought a case for it. (Cam's sat in a corner in the barn ready for popping coyotes, it smelled like cow crap) I showed him how to maintain it. He put a red dot Cam gave me when I put the scope on his AR, I'm not sure it'll hold zero, but we'll find out soon, he wants to get out to try it out!

Right on,buying your son his first rifle is priceless.
Bought my boy a Browning A-Bolt(left hand) in .30-06 way back in 1988 when he was 12 years old.
Bugger shot a moose his first year out and my tag was unfilled.

I got three girls.......but one showed interest. I didn’t get her that one but I did get a pink Cricket. Should’ve went with the crack back though. Plinking paper is all she’ll do for fear of actually killing something let alone maiming and have to follow up.

He bought it himself, with the money he owes me for the repairs to my truck. I am OK with it, because the shop ran out of them later that day.

Sounds like a good time with your son. Mine did shoot with me some until reaching his teen years. Not a real bad thing I guess as he's all about school and everything involved with band or writing music. He's now teaching himself the piano and excelling in that area....
I go to the range by myself and still have fun. I've pretty much decided if in about ten years he still has no interest I'll unload everything and buy myself something really fast and shiny.
BTW: good price on the rifle, that's about a $100 savings
