Tula M38
Hello all, I'm new to this forum and was looking for a little help. I have a chance to pick up a 1944 Tula M38 in an M44 stock. Matching numbers and counterbored. Bore is a little dark but rifling is good. Is the price of $350 enough of a reason to jump on it? I have a couple M44s but no M38s. Is it a no brainer for this no brainer? Thanks for any answers.

If you are just a "shooter", then a M44 will be close to the same thing as a M38.
If you are a collector, a M38 Tula is a little harder to find then the other Izhevsk M38's.
The price is a little on the high side (upper end) for a standard Izhevsk M38 (very close), but not for a Tula M38.
M38's are getting tougher to find. And almost impossible in a LGS.

Thanks for the fast reply. This store has 10 38s, 3 Russian 44s, 1 Chinese 53 and 1 Romanian 44. I collect some but shoot my M39s K31s and Swede mausers more. Some I may only shoot once and put away. I have some Finn stuff I haven't shot a Sig stepped M24 and a Finned 1895 Sestroryetsk. If it sits in a safe but appreciates in value that is fine. If I really enjoy shooting it and wear it out, that's ok too. Whatever the case, I cant take them with me so someone else will end up enjoying them someday. Thanks for the answer, I appreciate your time.

If I stumbled on a Tula M38 for that price I would be on it like a goose on a june bug. It took me a while to acquire an Izhevsk model from each year but I have never seen a Tula.

Being made for just the one year tends to make them harder to find, and expensive when you find one.

Well that makes 2 in the buy it column. Mosins are daunting when it comes to sheer numbers and models and makers. Just when I think I'm getting somewhere I find out I'm wrong or at best half right. Thanks for the reply.
Re: Tula M38
You would not take a beating at $350.00. I went on a multi-city gun trek today, and I don't see any Mosin-Nagant for under $300.00. If that is, indeed, the going rate for 91/30s, then I would consider the '38 at $350.00.

If anybody here says to hold off or do not buy it, it's because they are tracking it down for themselves.

Re: Tula M38
I was watching a 91/30 and a 1891 that sold for $350- 400 each . Is it matching? If you could find a M 38 Tula at a gun show it would be $400+

That just may be complete truth. Thanks for the reply, and a chuckle.Longcolt44 wrote:If anybody here says to hold off or do not buy it, it's because they are tracking it down for themselves.

Now who here would pull such a nasty trick like that?

Well, for one, I have Russian hackers looking for the OP's name and address, then I will check every shop and listing within one hundred miles. It is just good business...

You stand there Steve, someone needs to hold the shrubbery up, in the meantime I am just...now...completing...the wire transfer...to the sellers account...got it.

You know what I believe you all! Because of that I rarely talk about anything I see regardless of the price until its sitting in the shop. I have seen 2 Tula M38's in the last 6 months in local gun shops both and I bought neither of them for different reasons that are mine alone.
Say the secret word and I'll tell you where they are too!

Re: Tula M38
Well I pick it up Saturday. But I also found one more interesting so I purchased it too. This one I need help with.i will post pictures later. But it looks like a 41 Izhevsk. There seems to be a /42 in a smaller font after the 41.It also looks to have MO and DDR stamps and it is in a zig zag spliced M44 stock. Anyway I would love some information when I can get a pic or 2 up.

Ok not DDR marked. No glasses. But it is an odd stamp I have never seen before. And of course file size is too big and can't resize on my phone. Will have to wait until I get to the laptop. Sorry about this.
