M1895 Chilean Mauser
I found one yesterday at my lgs for $299. I don’t know anything about it. I checked the internet to research it and found something on Wikipedia. I don’t particularly trust Wikipedia because anyone can create an account and say whatever they want on there. The worst that can happen to it is that either it gets posted while invited and then someone else puts a footnote on it saying ‘citation needed’ or the information could be deleted in lieu of something else with the same scenario. Anyway, Wikipedia rant aside, I saw that the Chilean Mauser were produced between 1895-1900 by DWM and Ludwig Loewe. The one I saw was a Ludwig Loewe product. I’m not sure exactly if the production date is listed on the rifle anywhere. The closest thing I found from examining it was the number 99 on the bottom floor plate. I did not get the rifle because A: I’ve seen, even on Classic Firearms, the South American Mausers going for half of the $299 asking price. B: the rifle barrel, although not rusted and I admittedly don’t have a taclight yet, was beat to sheat. Several dings and wear marks to the point that I couldn’t read the proof marks on the barrel. Anyway, I like looking at the military surplus rifles that they get in regardless of whether I can get one or not. Any thoughts or information you’d have on the Chilean Mauser would be great! Thanks

If you bought it you would not be taking a whipping. You won't find hardly any Mauser, in any condition for under $250.00.(That even includes Turks any more) Pay close attention to the bore, if it has good rifling, it will be a fun shooter. A Lowe has antique status, which adds value. If I thought it had shooter possibility, I would try hard for $250.00 or under then if you grow tired of it you will be able to get rid of it without taking a bath. It is older than dirt, so find someone to head-space check it for you.
If I am not mistaken, someone on Gunbroker had a bait of them for sale recently.

Pretty standard type small ring Mauser, variations of it were popular with many South American countries as well as Spain,Turkey and others. I bought a set of them from Atlanta Discount Ammo in 1988 along with 1200 rounds of FN 7mm ammunition for around two hundred bucks, one rifle, one carbine. I still have both with 600 rounds or so of ammo remaining. Remember to check the headspace before firing it should you buy it as many of these were used long and hard.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Well, hmm. Now I’m reconsidering this. Im going back to the lgs tomorrow (most likely) and will make my decision beforehand if I’m still interested. What is a good price for 7x57mm ammo?

Hope this helps since I assume were talking about 7mm Mauser. Then again though 70 cents a round might be alot for 7mm mauser I dunno I'm to use to finding commercial 8mm at a dollar a round at best. I'd definately check the WTB WTT WTS forum though I think Joe on there was selling some 7mm mauser.

Re: M1895 Chilean Mauser
Prices have gone up for the Prvi ammo. I bought a bunch of it a couple of years ago for a lot less than 70 cents a round. I have found a lot of decent surplus in WTS boards and even bought a 500 round box of surplus some time ago. Problem is that only about 10% went bang. Primer problems and in some cases clumped up powder. Pulled the bullets on all of it, salvaging quite a few decent projectiles and almost all the powder. Reloaded them in boxer primed brass and they perform quite nicely. One reason I buy Prvi ammo - the brass. Now I've got more loaded 7mm ammo than I could ever use. That's, however, until next spring when I shoot it all
Bottom line is that if you reload, this is the way to go for 7mm and, I'm finding, most all Milsurps.

I tried Graf and Sons. They only had Winchester 7mm Mauser ammo for $1.68/round!
I checked the WTS forum here and did not find 7mm Mauser ammo. The only thing in the 7-8 mm range is a spam can 7.62 k11 ammo? Anyway, I’ll keep looking but so far I found 64.4 cents/round via Ammoseek

Re: M1895 Chilean Mauser
Target Sports has a really good deal. A case of 500 PPU for 69.9 cents a round with free shipping. I found this in the above link for Ammo Seek.
Re: M1895 Chilean Mauser
have one, maybe a year newer than this one. love it, it is a joy to shoot, for $299 you just about can't go wrong unless it is a total mismatch with no cleaning rod.

Better grab it because I'm thinking about it, just thinking.....but sometimes thinking turns into action, and I tend to buy bulk

We’ve been getting a lot of snow here lately. I have not been able to get to the store again to get that rifle. Hopefully nobody else gets there first. Once I have the rifle I will get ammo. Thanks though JYD
