Looking for a good shooter. I will be using cast bullets almost exclusively, so a nice bore is a real plus. This will be my first Mosin. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I've never ordered from Aim Surplus, But they have good prices and I've never seen a negative review. (however shipping and transfer can get pricey) Other than that, I'd just learn up on them and find a good deal localy.

EDIT:
round reciver rifle (sold out)$80 (they will be back soon)
hand pick (reccommended) $10
shipping ~$10-20
FFL transfer: ~$30

TOTAL: ~$135 (somewhere round there)

and a hex reciever (when in stock) is usually 10 bucks more

Bore condition is really luck of the draw from most of the online sellers I know of. I seem to recall one dealer who offered a "hand-pick for bore condition" option, (not the usual "hand-pick for overall appearance" option that is most often offered). It'll cost you ten or twenty bucks extra, and even then, don't expect a shiny bore. I'm told that they are out there, but I have not yet encountered a Mosin with a shiny bore.

These rifles are all from the same place, refurbished by the same people , I suspect the dealers all get a similar mix or rifles. Import marks might differ depending on who imported it. I bought Mosins from all the major suppliers, and many individual, or small dealers, the rifles were all of the same quality.

Get your C&R license. It costs $30 and is technically a dealer license for a collector. Now when you order from AIM, they ship the rifle direct to you.

Also, since you are a dealer now (technically) you can get dealer pricing at most online retail places if you provide a copy of your license. I just ordered an AR-15 stock and saved $25 because I got dealer pricing. I also just ordered an M44 from SOG that was shipped directly to me. No FFL transfer because technically, I am an FFL now. So that's $50 bucks I just saved and only had the license 2 weeks :)

Like I said. A better otion would just be learning up on the guns and then go hunt for one.

The rifle quality run in batches sometimes a nice batch sometimes not, it's hit or miss. Like another poster stated learn up and keep a look out and find the best rifle out there.

I have received some nice rifles from AIM. I got a 34 tula with a really nice bore. It shot better than my Classic Arms K31. You can email AIM, J&G and SOG them and ask about the bores on the current stock. I bought my last rifle from J&G. I wanted a round receiver with a laminated stock. I paid the $30 for bore select. It was very shiny and had a good crown. Haven't shot it yet. I have pictures posted on one of the threads. I bought one of SOG's M39's and it looked like a brand new barrel.

Son of a Gun you need to be 21 or older to qualify for a C&R FFL. Aim always sent me nice rifles, a gun shop could order one for you from Aim for a transfer fee, this fee could be as little as $15, or as high as $100 so ask first.

Check all of your local gun shops first. Locally (for me) there are about 4 small gun stores that routinely stock them. The price range is from 109.00 to 129.00. If you can find one locally then you save the FFL fee, the hand select fee, and the shipping. The only thing I had to pay extra for a local purchase was the $5.00 call in fee and tax on the sale. But, I knew exactly what I was getting because I picked it out myself. If no stores have them locally, AIM Surplus has been sending out some good looking guns.

The last 4 I got from AIM were some of the nicest ones I've seen. They were the laminates and I got 4 Tulas and the bores were mirror like. J&G has the handpick for bore option http://www.jgsales.com/-p-1041.html and they just got a new shipment of Hexes in. As mentioned before bore conditon can be luck of the draw with these unless you know someone, ;) Here's a list of places that have them. http://gun-deals.com/index.php?dealtype ... 4&subcat=5

I have bought three mosin nagant rifles and a nagant revolver from S.O.G. And I have been very pleased with the condition. My dad has bought several rifles from them also and he has always been pleased as well. I don't know where you live but if you go there they will let you pick through them as long as they are not busy. They will also let you hand pick for what you want if you are just ordering and not looking through. -Don

Yes you sure are an FFL and You are also subject to ATF inspections following all the rules that go along with the license. Many dealers refuse to except them or recognize what they even are so you will still have to do paperwork. You always have to carry a copy of it with you in case you find a dealer who will take it. Many dealers refuse to take it because they feel you are taking the money they make from the paperwork (which takes little or no effort from them and maybe 5 minutes of their time) and pay few of the costs they do. Any court of the land can supeonna your bound book and if charged with something this can seal the case against you.

The C & R is really only an enablement to conveniently buy guns on the internet if it is recognized by the seller. If it is worth a small discount occasionally to go through the hoops for the feds and others then by all means get one. I have been on both sides of this argument and I feel a lot better now that I no longer have a C & R. It was more hassle than I needed and I rarely buy online preferring a face to face buy when I know what I am getting. I handle any transfers through a dealer I have known for years and he has never charged me a cent for it. I had a similar deal when I lived up north where some dealers ripped buyers for $35 or $40 for a transfer. The C & R is a very personal choice and I prefer not to have one because it ain't all roses having one! Bill

Very true Bill. I held mine for the three year enlistment and that's it. I don't care to be under any government agencies thumb. I used the hell out of it while I had it, got what I wanted, and now I am content to play with 19th century rifles and face to face buys.

I personally won't use Classic ever because of their policy of not quoting shipping until your order is shipped. There's no way I'm turning over my credit card number with an exact amount. Then there's the whole issue of them chroming collectable firearms. Besides being crass they're ruining some historic weapons to make a buck. They're clueless and it shows simply by the fact that they have an 8 year old designing their website.
