Hi all, I posted this in the new member forum as a 42' Hex. The date was kinda light struck and looked like 42 but when I filled it in with white it was a 43'. Sorry if I misrepresented this rifle, it was not my intention!
Here is a photo of the markings:

Don't worry about it, I am blind as a bat also, you wouldn't believe the things I fail to see until I walk into them, or off the edge of them

You have a nice 1943, and in a reused receiver, that is always a cool touch

Oh yea, and Welcome to the forum

since it was uncommon for 1943 to have a hex receiver yours is quite unique. Very nice find for sure. Welcome and thanks for showing it.

Thank you all, for the kind words. I got both of these for 99each plus 10 dollar hand pick for Tula at SOG. I live near there so I didn't have to pay for shipping. For 110each I was pretty pleased, plus the 43' has brass on it's handguard. That is kinda cool also. You fellas think this rifle was used in WW2? That would really be cool! -Don

They were absolutely used in the war. I can hazard a 99.9% guess that it was used then. They needed every rifle that they had and they still didn't have enough.

Don't worry about the dates...wait until you look at a heavy struck 1941 or a light struck 1944. I still get mine mixed up
That's a pretty awesome Tula! Congrats on finding a really nice rifle right off the bat!

Late date Tula hex? I'm a newbie but I'm fairly sure that's pretty uncommon. Nice get!

The need for weapons was so great in 1943 that Izhevsk arsenal, The USSR's largest producing the Mosin, was sending rifles out without final outer finishing on the metal parts. A rifle from the 1941-1944 period or before is sure to have been issued to the Red Army, what exactly they did with it we will never know.

I agree, and am also interested in the tang date.

Nice uncommon variation to get the collection ball rolling, you did extremely well!

The rear most part of the receiver were the action screw goes through is the tang. Flip it over so you are looking at the underside of it and sometimes you will find a date stamped there. It's rarely four digits, but might be the last three, or two of a date like 916 for 1916, or 43 for 1943, and so on.

Well I had some time so I got it apart and there was a bit of a surprise. Is this receiver really over one HUNDRED years old?!?!?

Don't know if this adds anything to the rifle but I think it is really cool. -Don

Izhevsk 1900 receiver, the Soviets and Finns reused receivers whenever possible. Receivers are expensive and the heart of the rifle, they were not wasted.

Nice find. Welcome to the neighborhood, both the forum and another Ohio member. I live about 30 minutes from both AIM and SOG. Please submit 4 copies of your permit to look for milsurps in Clermont County to the undersigned.

You never know where you will find marks on the gun. There could be marks on the underside of the handgaurd or in the barrel channel and sometimes behind the butt plate (In the case of spanish civil war mosins). LC was just funnin with ya
