22 Ammo Question

Post by ffuries »

When I inherited the 1973 Marlin 22 Original Golden -39M from my dad there were some little 22 rounds. They were in a round tin and were shorter than anything I've seen before IE shorter than a 22 short, shell maybe half the size of a 22 short. I'm am 99% positive there was a projectile in it. So I am assuming it was some sort of varmint/pest round. Would take a picture but someone needed them more than I did so the tin walked.

Does this round sound familiar to anyone? Only reason I thought of it is the backyard neighbors shed is infested with some big ass rats. At night when I am outback having a smoke I watch them run back and forth on the fence. My Huskies go nuts and won't stay away from the fence and even try to climb it to get to them. Figured I get a pellet gun to deal with them, but the 22 rounds popped into my mind.

Those sound like CB caps or Flobert rounds. They should shoot fine, but being as short as they are you may have feed issues. Also due to their low velocity make sure each bullet clears the barrel before firing any additional shots. I had one of the .22 colibri rounds get stuck about 1/2 way down the barrel of my BRNO #1.

BTW they should make almost no noise out of your Model 39.

Awesome, thank you, they turned out to be 22 Flobert BB Cap rounds, basically like shown below,. So now I know what to call them when I look for them.

RWS makes them, IIRC. I just use Aguila Super Colibris, I bought a brick of them about 10 years ago, and still have a couple boxes left.

The Colibris that entropy mentions are what I would use for rats if I needed to be quiet about it. They turn your .22 into a badass airgun that makes even less noise. Take heed of my above caution and find a gun they will exit the barrel reliably. I shoot them through a Win 270 pump and have never had an issue. You have to really adjust the sights though, as the trajectory on these is way more than a regular .22. I would save those Flobert rounds for rainy day basement plinking. They were designed for parlor guns. Back in the day after dinner, Gentleman would retire to the study for brandy, cigars, and a small shooting competition.

I have had little luck with those. I always assumed it was the rifling that messed up their performance. Marlin used to make a "Garden Gun". It was a smoothbore bolt action that used the .22 mag shot shells, and was advertised to being lethal to 30 yards. Thought sounds a bit iffy to me, but lethal to 50 ft would be good.

Only picture I have of it at the moment, I'll need to take some pictures of it post them in another post soon.
The parts are all original to the rifle, sling has been on it since my dad bought the rifle in 1973, the cheap Tasco scope he added sometime in the 90's or so.

So here she is....1973 Marlin Original Golden - 39M that my father bought new from the Rod and Gun Club while we were stationed at Zaragoza AB Spain (72-75). This is the gun that I learned to shoot with, but not the first gun I shot.

I used the all-brass Winchester ones for bats in my belfry, er attic, in the old farmhouse I rented. I would go up in the day when they were sleeping, pop a few, then they'd all try to get out the hole by the chimney, so I'd stand there and pop them until the mag ran dry, then put another mag in, and go till all three were empty. then I'd go out on the lawn and finish off the wounded with a hoe. After they went south or whatever the hell bats do for winter, I sealed the hole with that foam stuff, then in mid-winter, when SWMBO sent me up there for Xmas stuff, I went up and finshed off the 6 or 8 that were hibernating up there. I could just walk quietly up to them, put the barrel next to their head and pop 'em. Never completely got rid of them, nor was that my intent, as they do perform a service, but where there's several hundred of them in your belfry attic, and they are whelping in an old fur coat right in the other side of the door, (walk-up attic) and the kid is scared poopless, you do want to cut the numbers down....

My nephew has a 60's Daisy .22 that fires a .22 bullet with no case, If I remember right it's like a paper cap, the whole thing goes out the barrel when fired. Is that a Flobert?

Have no idea what he's shooting them out of. I know they don't work worth a darn out of a Heritage Rough Rider, shot a copperhead with all six rounds at about 2 foot to kill it and it took all six. Switched up to the .38 with shot shells, or the 12 gauge with #6 shot does the trick much better.
