M28 Tikka - a hot mess!!!

Post by KC651 »

Picked this up yesterday to bring it back back to life. The rifle has excellent bore that shines like a mirror and the action is butter smooth. But as you can see this rifle is in a m27 popsickle stick stock, and someone had redone the stock with like a shilack. Luckily Ive located a nice m28 stock and not a m28/30.

But the usual part is the stock disc, how would I know if the disc is correct to the m28 Tikka or if it was to the original m27? It's releaf cut in the stock for the disc to sit flush, but someone could have done that when transplanting and refinishing. But also the disc has different info on both sides.

Any ideas of the disc tag?

To see an M28 in an M27 stock, especially an improved pop-sickle type one, is not unusual so I would not rush into changing what might be the rifles history. As far as the unit disc being used twice I would say use the side you found facing out as the one you keep that way. There is a fellow doing a provenance service on individual rifles on another board and in your case I would think it would be smart to pay for the service and see if he can give you any background on the individual rifle before you go changing anything on the rifle or swapping stocks and refinishing what you alone may be thinking is wrong. Many collectors rush into things all butt over teakettle, meaning well, but destroying the true history of the rifle. Do a little more looking before you destroy the original history of the rifle through well intentioned "fixing steps". Bill ;mywink;

Yeah I agree. While the stock does look refinished o would not go swapping it. Bubba would not get an M27 stock to fix s broken one. Finns made very good use of what they had so an M28 in an M27 stock is not out of the realm of possibilities.. Do you know who is doing that provenance service. I'd like to do that.

It looks to me that the dark staining on the stock seems to match in area the heavy pitting on the receiver and barrel. Maybe, maybe not relevant . Just something to consider.

TR is Tampereen Rykmentti (Tampere Regiment) which existed 1929-1939. A CG rifle wouldn't have been in the Army inventory before the wars, so the disc belongs to a m/27 stock. As the rifle itself is a CG model, its history might be found at the Finnish archives, and the "donor" m/27's history might be also available. The homepage of Finnish Mosin provenance service is http://www.mosin.fi/

I've seen it on T-53's and an MO 1930/53 I still have. Blood, left on the metal is very corrosive. Also, you cannot get blood stains out of wood. It turns it dark. You have a bloody Finn. When you get it unrusted ,give it a thin coat of vaseline everywhere under the wood, it should stay rust free. :2cents:

By the way, soaking the parts in Kroil, and using Kroil soaked in bronze wool will help remove the rust.

Here's great link to rust removal. https://forums.1911forum.com/showthread ... ost4146541
