Used to be the most common magazine on the market was a steel 30 round AK mag, I remember buying them by the dozen. Has the supply run dry? East German was my favorite back then, like the rest of the DDR in 1992 it was all for sale at penny's on the dollar, they were nice magazines.

There are still plenty of European AK magazines out there. I'm partial to the Yugoslavian bolt hold open ones myself.

I have a couple of them, picked them up on sale here and there over the years. They're OK, but like any polymer mag, can crack, usually at the base of the lip.

I think aim still has the Polish steel 30 rounders for right at or under $10. I picked up some a while back and have been really happy with them.

Unless Classic got wind of everyone complaining, their shipping is outrageous.

There are new steel mags being made in Croatia and they are excellent! I picked some up from SG Ammo.

I don't see the value of a bolt hold open mag. As soon as you drop the empty the bolt just slams shut anyway.

Well worth it to let you know that you're out of ammo instead of that dry fire. Once you do it a few times you notice the difference. I still have a few polymer mags but slowly transitioning over to the Croatian ones.

CDNN Sports has new in the oiled wrapper Bulgarian steel AK-47 magazines for just $14.88 each. I have purchased dozens of these magazines from them, and they are far superior to any of the cheaper plastic magazines on the market. I've seen old, rusty, beat up specimens of this same magazine selling for more. These are brand spanking new, and fit and function flawlessly. Don't confuse these with the much cheaper look alike Korean AK mags that are saturating the market now. They are nowhere near the quality of these Bulgarian all steel mags.

As a very knowledgeable AK collector once told me, never buy AK-47 magazines from a country that does not produce the weapon it fits into. It's good, sound advice, because I've seen a lot of those Korean mags that are nothing but trouble. A discounted magazine that does not function properly is every bit as worthless as no magazine at all. Because either way you've got a single shot rifle.

For that price buy a few & mothball them for the next ban scare? Otherwise I would pass.

I wouldn't mind finding a few Hungarian 20rnd Tanker mags though. I shoulda got a few back in the day. :angry4:

I thought you had one that came with the AMD kit. I gave mine to my Dad. Wouldn't mind having it back.

I just received two of the new Croatian 30 round magazines from Centerfire, came out to $15 per for them after adding in shipping. Ill say that these are the highest quality I've ever seen as far as the manufacturing process. No super sharp edges to lay a finger open if you're not careful, all the welds are exactly where they should be and best of all, NO WOBBLE at all in my WASR 10/63.

The steel ones are better. On occasion I have bought some polymer ones and had problems with fit. Found you had to take a little material off the sides to get them to fit.

I bought my AK back in '08 and it came with two tapco mags that work just fine. Later at the same LGS I bought two Bulgarian steel mags they work fine too, all are 30 round. +1 on the last round hold open, drop empty load a new and cycle the charging handle.

I had two Tapco's that came with my WASR when I bought it. Our LGS had a sale about a year ago and I bought 2 of the Croation mags for about 6 bucks apiece. They are nice high quality mags.
