Carbine Builds

Post by Witchdoctor »

So question....I see different types of kits for various types of carbines/rifles that are not complete, missing barrels, receivers or whatever. Is it legal to buy one of these kits, then go to another distributor and purchase the missing part/parts to complete. Two I have in mind is an AK and a PPS43, can I do this legally?

Absolutely legal to do so depending on your local and state laws. They can't import and sell the rifles complete or imported receiver which is considered the firearm and the only part that requires a FFL to transfer. So usually the receivers will not be included. If they are they are cut. There is nothing wrong with having the barrel as part of the kit but many don't since the barrels were shot out and scrapped. Some rifles like the AK you can buy an American Made Receiver. However you need to be 922r compliant so other parts need to be Americans Made as well. You can also try to repair the receiver by welding it back together however it should be cut in such a way that it is not easy to do so and is not recommended.

I wish someone would finally produce a Stgw-57 receiver. I've read rumors about one coming to market for years, but nothing ever happens. The kits were and are relatively cheap compared to what the rifles sell for. A couple years ago $400 now $700 but they are basically useless, unless you are a master gunsmith, fabricator, and welder. Need to make a barrel and receiver to get them to work. I am hoping with advances in CNC machines someone does one day.

Gotcha, yeah here in Fl laws are pretty flexible, any size mags, I've seen receivers for AK's at SOG and kits everywhere, PPS kit for $149.00 elsewhere w/o barrel and receiver but found those too...thinking about ordering me one or the other to start.

Google Sec. 922r

There are regulations that govern how to do it. There are "parts counts" that must be met. A certain number of parts must be US made. with the barrel importation bans, this number is easier to attain than it used to be. It used to be quite a challenge to meet parts counts and still keep a build looking authentic.

A PPS must be built as a semi-auto, there are mods that must be made to the bolt, not a beginners kit. Also the choice must be made whether to build it as a rifle or a pistol, as the kits usually come with the stock. To use the stock, it must either be built with a 16+ inch barrel, or SBR'd (NFA & $200 Tax Stamp) , or without the stock and provision to attach one.

There is nothing wrong with having the barrel as part of the kit but many don't since the barrels were shot out and scrapped.
That is not why barrels don't come with most kits. The ATF regs. on importation changed several years ago, and barrels can no longer be imported with the kits. Kits you find with an original barrel these days were imported before that, and command a premium.
