Firing Pin

Post by chefchoy »

Had some issues with my firing pin. Hopefully someone here can help. It was literally falling out of the rear of the bolt and realized that the lip that holds it in and the retaining pin were both worn pretty bad. Easy fix.......I hop on eBay and order firing pin and retainer pin. Get them in and cleaned up and immediately notice that the firing pin is a different shape than the one that I removed from the gun. Here is the original.......

The one I pulled out has a triangular shape to it. Here is the one I received from the guy on eBay. It is more round.

The tip of the new one (on the left) is much larger than the original (on the right).

When i contacted the dude from eBay, he acted like he had never heard of such a thing. He refunded me......which was great, but my gun don't go bang bang anymore.....and that makes me sad. Here is what I get trying to put the pin in the bolt......just don't fit. First is the original......

and here is the new one.....just don't fit.

Hopefully someone can help. Thanks guys!

Spring loaded firing pin is the only way to go if you're replacing. Free floated firing pins require frequent inspection to prevent slam fires.

I did Google.......and I know about the spring loaded firing pins.....but I am not going to order another 40 dollar firing pin to find out it's not the right size again. I noticed that there were some pre 51 options......is that what I have. Was hoping there was some knowledge here to help me.

Best option would be to have your local gunsmith inspect the pins and bolt. It looks like the fix could be a trip to the shop and turning it down in a lathe. Either your smith will have the machinery to do it or they'll know a shop that can do the job for you.

More info would be helpful; What country SKS? Year? Rounded or squared FP retaining pin?
